Kelan is always in second place.

At home, he's the overlooked second son, with a talented older brother and a cheerful, sweet-talking younger brother. Caught between them, he's like a weed growing in a dark corner, constantly ignored.

At school, he's the second place no one pays attention to. All the glory goes to the first-place student, the crown prince, who was born with every honor and is dazzlingly gifted. The prince shines so brightly that Kelan's own light seems all the dimmer.

So, as soon as he comes of age, Kelan heads without hesitation to the declining Langlu Military Academy on the empire's remote frontier, pretending he's escaped the curse of always coming second.

Only he knows that deep into the night, a fierce, maddening hatred and ambition rise up from within him: the desire to drag that lofty crown prince down into the mud. He thinks of it day and night, unable to let it go.

Later, he hears that a coup has broken out in the imperial family. The emperor is dead, the crown prince's uncle has taken the throne, and the crown prince is gravely wounded and missing.

"Kelan, please help me." The crown prince, his brilliant golden hair disheveled, presses a hand to the wound in his abdomen and looks at him imploringly with blue eyes, in a wretched state.

The moon is veiled in dust, yet still shines brightly.

Kelan indulges the ambition that has tormented him day and night, and gives a strange smile. "All right. In exchange, half of everything you own will belong to me."

The crown prince is taken aback and asks solemnly, "Including my life and soul?"

"That's right."

He asks again, "Are you sure?"

Kelan answers firmly, "I'm sure."

The crown prince speaks as if making a vow: "All right. I agree."

Later, they work together to reclaim the throne. Kelan stands at the very top, gazing down at the people who have submitted to him, his expression dazed.

The crown prince stands beside him, takes his hand, and smiles. "All right, now we should get married. What kind of wedding do you want?"

Kelan: "?"

The most important rule of the Vladimir royal family: If you are willing to share everything you have with another person, including your life and soul, it means you are willing to become their partner and never part.
