Synopsis
Midnight Flight (Mystery Novel)
Author: Cai Ge
- Story setting: The story takes place in China in 2025, an era when the micro-drama industry is booming but facing increasingly strict oversight. The protagonist, Lin Xia, is a young micro-drama director preparing a mystery series called Midnight Flight, adapted from a real aviation disaster. During filming, however, the crew is beset by a series of bizarre incidents, including an actor's sudden death and a script that uncannily mirrors reality, hinting at a larger conspiracy. Meanwhile, fierce competition in the industry and pressure from policy reviews leave Lin Xia struggling to balance artistic ambition with survival.
- Main plot: While filming Midnight Flight, Lin Xia discovers that the script's events bear a startling resemblance to a real case. Suspecting that someone is pulling the strings, she investigates and becomes entangled in a vast conspiracy involving industry giants, government officials, and a mysterious organization. As her investigation deepens, Lin Xia discovers that her own past is inextricably linked to the case, and her life is in danger. At a critical moment, she uses the reach of micro-dramas to make the truth public, drawing widespread attention and ultimately exposing the conspiracy.
Midnight Flight
Chapter One: The Flight in the Mist
March 2025, Hengdian World Studios. Lin Xia stood at the launch ceremony for Midnight Flight, forcing a smile as she answered questions from the press. The micro-drama had a budget of 800,000 yuan and was adapted from the "3.15 air disaster" that had shocked the nation ten years earlier. As a novice director, she had thought this was a golden opportunity. She had no idea that a nightmare was about to begin.
"Director Lin, I hear you used AI-generated storyboards this time?" The reporter's question brought Lin Xia back to the present.
"That's right," she said with a nod. "We're trying out new technology to improve efficiency and give the audience a different kind of experience."
But on the third day of filming, Chen Yu, the actress playing a flight attendant, suddenly collapsed on set. She was rushed to the hospital, where she died. The forensic report listed acute heart failure as the cause of death, but Lin Xia noticed that Chen Yu had clutched a yellowed photograph in her hand until the very end. It showed an unfamiliar airport.
That night, Lin Xia received an anonymous email with an unreleased video of Chen Yu attached. In it, Chen Yu trembled as she said, "They said I knew too much..." The image suddenly warped, then froze on a Network Drama Distribution Permit. Its number did not match the series they were filming at all.
Chapter Two: The Mirror Maze
Lin Xia began to suspect there was a mole among the crew. She also discovered that the AI-generated storyboards depicted scenes that had never happened in real life, including Chen Yu's death. Even stranger, the storyboards' timeline exactly matched the black box recordings from the air disaster ten years earlier.
"Director Lin, the review comments from the National Radio and Television Administration are in." Producer Wang Qiang sounded anxious. "They want us to change every scene involving supernatural elements, or they won't approve the filing."
Lin Xia stared at the review comments, then suddenly noticed that the filing number's format looked familiar. She opened the photograph Chen Yu had left behind and saw the same number clearly printed in the background of the airport terminal: (Zhejiang) Online Micro-Drama Filing, 2025, No. ***.
Late that night, Lin Xia went alone to the prop room and found an old production journal in a battered trunk. On its yellowed pages, she read that the crew behind the "3.15 air disaster" had filmed at the same location ten years ago. The director's name was none other than... Chen Yu.
Chapter Three: The Double Truth
Lin Xia realized she was trapped in a time loop. The air disaster ten years earlier had not been an accident. It was a staged illusion meant to conceal a world-shattering secret. Chen Yu, who had known the truth back then, had somehow sent information to her future self ten years later. Filming Midnight Flight was the key to breaking the loop.
"Lin Xia, you've finally arrived." A familiar voice sounded in the darkness. Lin Xia turned and saw a woman with the same face as hers: herself from ten years ago.
"What's going on?" Lin Xia asked, trembling.
"Ten years ago, I staged the air disaster to expose the truth," the other Lin Xia said. "But they rewrote history. Now you have to find the evidence again and reveal the truth before the review deadline."
Before she could say more, the prop room shook violently, sending countless documents fluttering through the air. Lin Xia saw a sentence written on one of them: "Every micro-drama filing number is a key to a time tunnel."
Chapter Four: The Final Review
On the day of the review, Lin Xia brought the revised script to the National Radio and Television Administration. As she waited for the results, she noticed that the electronic clock on the wall read 12:00 a.m. on March 15, 2025, the exact moment the air disaster had occurred ten years earlier.
"Director Lin, your filing has been approved." A staff member handed her a document. "The number is a little unusual. It was issued directly by the administration."
Lin Xia took it and saw the number: (National) Online Micro-Drama Filing, 2025, No. 001. Suddenly, she felt dizzy, and the world around her began to distort. When she opened her eyes again, she was standing in the airport terminal from ten years ago, facing her younger self, who was about to board a plane.
"Don't get on the plane!" Lin Xia shouted. "This is the air disaster!"
But her younger self only smiled and pointed to the security camera overhead. Lin Xia followed her gaze and saw a faint red light blinking on the lens. It was the same image that had appeared in the AI-generated storyboards.
Chapter Five: The Endless Loop
Lin Xia awoke with a start, only to find herself still at the review. The staff member looked at her with concern. "Director Lin, are you all right?"
She looked down at the filing document in her hand. The number was still (National) Online Micro-Drama Filing, 2025, No. ***. But this time, the issue date was 12:00 a.m. on March 15, 2025.
After leaving the National Radio and Television Administration, Lin Xia took out her phone and saw that the date was March 15, 2025. She looked up at the sky. A passenger plane swept across the clouds.
"I see," Lin Xia murmured. "The moment the filing is approved, time resets. The only way to break this loop is to spread the truth online."
She opened a livestreaming app and began to tell the whole story in real time. As the number of viewers surged, the passenger plane in the sky suddenly changed course and plunged toward the ground...
Chapter Six: Breaking the Deadlock
Lin Xia woke again to find herself lying in a hospital bed. The sun shone brightly outside the window, and her phone showed the date as March 16, 2025.
"Director Lin, your series is a hit!" Wang Qiang rushed into the room, excited. "The livestream from the day of the review went viral across the internet. The administration has already formed an investigative team to thoroughly examine the air disaster from back then!"
Lin Xia smiled. She knew she had finally broken the ten-year time loop. But she also understood that in an industry full of lies and conspiracies, the truth would never come to light easily.
As she left the hospital, Lin Xia looked up at the sky. A passenger plane flew steadily overhead. Her phone chimed with a new email notification. The sender was Chen Yu. The attachment was a video: "We'll meet again in another ten years."
Lin Xia took a deep breath and smiled with relief. She knew that this race against time and the truth had only just begun.
