Sparrow's Roost [Beijing Circle]

Resilient x refined, a Beijing socialite romance, with a five-year age gap

Song Ran first met Pei Jiang Yu during her sophomore-year summer break. She was working at a flower and bird market and delivering a pair of expensive parrots to Courtyard No. 5 on Orchid Lane.

It was a three-courtyard siheyuan, and Song Ran remembered visiting it with her grandparents.

Outside the vermilion gate, the elegant man's voice was deep and magnetic. "It's so hot out. Why not come inside and sit for a bit?"

Song Ran shook her head. "I'll wait by the gate."

The second time Song Ran saw Pei Jiang Yu, she was working part-time at a restaurant, and he was the guest of honor at a dinner party.

After her shift, Song Ran ran into her persistent ex-boyfriend on the street. A car pulled up in front of her, and the man stepped out and walked over at an unhurried pace.

"Sorry I'm late picking you up."

After her family fell on hard times, Song Ran never coveted what wasn't hers. She could support herself.

Pei Jiang Yu said he coveted her.

Later, when Song Ran had money, she looked at the man pouting for affection and thought she seemed to have acquired a pet canary.
