Wei Zhengyu came from a noble family, and the Wei family had earned the emperor's favor. Before long, an imperial decree would betroth the Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince to Wei Zhengyu.
The Wei family's power was rising by the day, making the capital's noble families both jealous and envious.
Amid a chorus of congratulations and flattery, Wei Zhengyu was about to be married.
Then, out of nowhere, disaster struck.
A handsome man, beautiful as a blooming crabapple, led a little girl to the entrance of the Wei residence. He stopped Wei Zhengyu as she was on her way to meet the Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince, fell to his knees, and tearfully clutched at the hem of her robe.
"My wife, are you abandoning me and Tong'er?"
The street outside the Wei residence was packed with carriages and people, and invitations were still pouring into the house.
His words left everyone speechless.
The news spread like wildfire through every street and alley, reaching the imperial palace in the blink of an eye.
The Imperial Guards soon arrived with the emperor's decree, ordering Wei Zhengyu and the two newcomers to come before her at once.
With the man tugging at her hem and the little girl clinging to her leg, calling her Mother over and over, Wei Zhengyu accepted the decree in a daze, looking as if she'd been struck by lightning.
In the imperial study, the emperor sat on the throne, with the Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince and Prince Gong seated nearby.
The hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
After Wei Zhengyu paid her respects, she was about to speak when the man behind her stepped up beside her and took her hand in front of the emperor.
"Your Majesty, I have been apart from my wife for three years, and we have a daughter, Tong'er. I beg Your Majesty to grant this humble man his wish and reunite me and Tong'er with my wife."
The Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince's eyes reddened. He slapped the armrest, stood up, and rebuked him. "Nonsense! Do you have any proof?"
Cen Lansheng wasn't intimidated. He looked straight at the Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince and declared, "My wife's mole is three inches below her ribs. If Your Highness doubts me, you may have someone examine her."
Wei Zhengyu turned sharply, disbelief in her eyes.
Under her gaze, Cen Lansheng's face flushed a delicate red, making him look all the more beautiful.
Wei Zhengyu looked away and focused on the little girl. The longer she looked, the more alarmed she became.
That nose, those eyes: up close, the girl really did resemble her.
Wei Zhengyu was dazed. If she hadn't known for certain that she had never lost her memory, even she would have believed she'd once wronged a man and left him pregnant.
At that moment, Prince Gong sat up as if coming to his senses. With a hint of urgency, he rose and bowed to the empress.
"Mother Empress, since things stand this way, why not grant them a marriage decree, to demonstrate Your Majesty's wisdom?"
"Sister!"
The Phoenix Sun Imperial Prince stood in fury, staring at Prince Gong as if betrayed.
Wei Zhengyu raised her eyes. For an instant, her gaze discreetly swept across Prince Gong, and a glint flickered in her eyes. Then she knelt.
"I beg Your Majesty to withdraw the decree and grant me this favor."
Watching the woman beside her kneel and make her plea, Cen Lansheng's heart raced. He stared at her, his hands trembling slightly.
Wei Zhengyu had actually agreed just like that?
How was this not going the way he'd expected?
Much later...
"Tong'er isn't your child."
"I know that, of course."
"At first, I really thought you were the faithless woman who had wronged my brother. I thought you'd caused his death, and that Tong'er was his child too. I wanted her to live openly and honorably, not become an orphan without a clear identity or a family name, bullied and mocked like my brother and me."
"...I know. That's why I don't blame you."
"Wei Zhengyu, you're so good to me. I shouldn't have kept you from marrying the imperial prince, sob..."
"If you feel that guilty, then give yourself to me as compensation, my dear husband."
The female lord cupped the cheeks of her crying husband, who had lowered his head, and kissed his brow.
"The Moon Goddess tied our red thread tightly, sending you across thousands of miles to stand before me. All I have to do is follow my heart.
A lifetime is long, and it's short, too. I can't take care of everything, so I'll take care of you."
Cen Lansheng clutched Wei Zhengyu's robe, sobbing. His eyes held love, infatuation, and an unmistakable trace of guilt.
He had no intention of leaving Wei Zhengyu.
Even though Wei Zhengyu's childhood friend was an imperial prince, Prince Gong's younger brother, and Cen Lansheng had taken out some of his anger on him, he had never planned to divorce Wei Zhengyu and leave the Wei family once he fell in love with her.
He was born lowly, and the only way he'd survived was by fighting and grabbing whatever he could.
Wei Zhengyu was so wonderful. How could he possibly let her go and give her to that imperial prince?
He would be Wei Zhengyu's husband for life, clinging to her forever.
