The General's Wife

A short story told in first person.

I was Yang Huaizhen's mistress for three years.

He took me to military camps and palace banquets.

My parents treated me like their own daughter.

Even His Majesty teased that if Yang returned victorious, he would arrange our marriage.

But the first thing Yang did after returning from the war was ask His Majesty to arrange his marriage to the enemy kingdom's princess.

Only then did I realize I was nothing more than a plaything he could take or leave.

On their wedding day, pregnant and dressed in bridal robes, I leapt from the city tower.

For the rest of his life, whenever he looked at the princess, I wanted him to remember the red robes drifting down from the tower.
