The entertainment industry’s wildest top-tier star, the one being, x the sharp-tongued agronomy PhD, the one pursuing
A top-tier star’s firsthand account of going rural to farm, with two male leads teaming up to modernize agriculture
Jiang Lin was once a top-tier star in the entertainment industry, but a scandal at a drinking party sent him plummeting. After offending powerful investors to protect someone, he was blacklisted for two years. When he finally reappeared, his company had dumped him on a farming variety show where the guests were left to “sink or swim.”
The production crew split the guests up and sent them to different farming households to film. People in the industry mocked them: “Washed-up celebrities farming? Even the act is too fake!”
The director said, “You really have to farm. If you can’t grow anything, the show will flop, and you’ll never make a comeback!”
Jiang Lin sneered and tried to walk off, but the farmer promptly shoved a hoe into his hands! The aunties watching nearby munched on sunflower seeds and muttered, “The Pei family’s son is even crazier. He got his PhD in Beijing, came back to farm, and Old Pei chased him around with a broom!”
Jiang Lin turned around and ran straight into Pei Xu, hiding behind a woodpile. His gaze was cold behind gold-rimmed glasses, and Jiang Lin, who was used to seeing beautiful people in the entertainment industry, found himself holding his breath.
From the center of the stage to the middle of a field, top-tier star Jiang Lin was forced to shoulder a hoe and do farm labor at the farmers’ beck and call.
Pei Xu wasn’t about to let this perfect publicity opportunity pass him by. He deliberately got close to Jiang Lin. The two men, close in age, gradually warmed up to each other through childish bickering. Pei Xu teased him, “Young Master Jiang, you’re holding the hoe backward. What are you digging for, a hole in the wall to steal light?” Yet when work ended at dusk, he tossed a thermos into Jiang Lin’s arms. “Water at a little over thirty degrees is better for a dehydrated patient than your iced Americano.”
Looking at the 180,000 Mo Hong rose bushes, Jiang Lin suddenly gritted his teeth. “I’m going to grow a whole sea of roses!”
In the neighboring field, Pei Xu was testing the soil when he suddenly looked up at the figure furiously planting flowers beneath the sunset. His Adam’s apple bobbed.
Then, one night during harvest season, a torrential rain poured down. When Pei Xu woke up, he saw on the computer monitor that Jiang Lin had rushed to the fields to save the roses. Pei Xu immediately grabbed a raincoat and hurried over. “It’s pouring! Why aren’t you wearing a raincoat? Do you want to catch a cold?”
Rain streamed down Jiang Lin’s face as he shouted, “There’s no time! Hurry and harvest them!”
When the show aired, it got off to a spectacular start, and its ratings kept rising. Jiang Lin worked harder and harder, too.
In a blind spot of the surveillance cameras late at night, Pei Xu applied ointment to Jiang Lin’s wound. “Tomorrow, no showing off, and no wearing those Martin boots that rub your feet.”
Jiang Lin raised an eyebrow. “Dr. Pei, are you even going to dictate what I wear?”
Pei Xu suddenly moved closer. “I’m going to take care of you from now on.”
Jiang Lin’s popularity soared again, but he turned down the scripts that came pouring in.
Standing in the fields, Jiang Lin smiled at the camera. “This time, it’s not a livestream promoting brands. We’re selling fruit to support local farmers and launching a tree-planting campaign.”
After the show ended.
Jiang Lin dragged Pei Xu back into the room, turned, and bit his lip. “Teacher Pei, you still haven’t paid back all the money you owe me. I’m not leaving.”
With investors pulling the strings, the show returned to Pei Family Village for a second season. But a cast change sparked a backlash from fans, who fiercely opposed it, and Jiang Lin was able to continue filming.
As the entertainment industry planted flowers in the ruins, agriculture put down roots amid the traffic. And on a spring night when no one was watching, they measured the height of the growing wheat together, fingers intertwined.
Pre-release blurb for When the Cicadas of North and South Have Yet to Fall Silent
In early 1990, Pei Yu, a boy from Northeast China, was sent by his parents to a small border town in Guangxi.
There, he met Jiang Chuan.
Pei Yu was fussy about everything, while Jiang Chuan was carefree and unruly.
Jiang Chuan: “Young master, we don’t have toilet paper here.”
Pei Yu: “I’m not using bamboo strips!”
It took only one summer filled with the incessant chirping of cicadas for dislike to turn into closeness.
Then, in the fall of 1995, Pei Yu stumbled upon Jiang Chuan’s secret: Jiang Chuan had never gone to high school.
Pei Yu, rarely losing control, grabbed Jiang Chuan by his faded collar. “Jiang Chuan, do you even know what you’re doing?”
Jiang Chuan looked at him, his gaze as still as a river in the dead of night. “I know.”
Later, Pei Yu went south to Guangzhou for college, while Jiang Chuan got a job at an electronics factory. Their lives seemed to be heading in opposite directions.
But the thread buried deep in their past had already quietly twisted into a knot in those long-ago days filled with the cries of cicadas.
Theme: Farming isn’t a fallback. It’s a sunrise industry.
Does the author have some inspiration from that farming variety show? (No malice intended)
I don't like to give negative reviews, but it's really uncomfortable to watch. I say that I didn't refer to the farming variety show, and the source of inspiration was my hometown. However, in just one or two chapters, I used at least three farming bar memes (macho man, empty boy, fell down at the old site, I don't like your current expression (the author seems to like lh's memes)), which is actually a bit outrageous.
The author's intention is really good 🎆🎆
""Sister Ling. "Jiang Lin's final voice rose, with a bit of flattery, and the subtext was: "Sister, I need a job. ""Catch a big bug for the author~ Is it Sister Xiu or Sister Ling? [Afraid]
"Pei Xu" gave the author a big worm~ Jiang Lin
"Jiang Lin" is a big thorn in the side of the author~ Pei Xu
"They called loudly at the door: "Village Chief, Chun Ling, you have a guest coming. ""Catch a big bug for the author~ I'm sorry I misunderstood. Sumei is their son's wife 🙏 I was a bit mindless when I read the article at night.
"They called loudly at the door: "Village Chief, Chun Ling, you have a guest coming. ""Catch a big bug for the author~ The Chunling here should be the village chief's wife. . Everyone calls me Zhao Sumei later 🙏
"Jiang Lin softened his voice and said, "Sister Xiu, none of the other guests for this show are well-known in the industry. I guess they are not even the 18th line. It is not suitable for my status to cooperate with them. ""Catch a big bug for the author~ When I was on the phone, it was still Sister Ling, why is it Sister Xiu here [question mark]
Teacher, do you want to write a long story? 😆
