The Fake Couple of the Eighties

Big-Courtyard Gossip / Both Transmigrate / Secret Identities Revealed / Rags to Riches

Everyone on Wutong Street knew that the steel mill compound had a neighborhood loafer named Shen Jin.

Shen Jin was twenty years old. He'd quit school after elementary school, couldn't read a single character, and spent every day hanging around, bothering cats and dogs.

His stepmother kept urging his father to split up the family, so that her own younger son could inherit everything.

The Lu family in Xiaofeng Village had three sons and a daughter. Their youngest, Lu Yao, was twenty and lazy beyond belief.

She was twenty and still wouldn't even wash her own underwear. She'd have a giant pancake hung around her neck if she could.

Not a single family in the surrounding villages had come to propose marriage, and Old Man Lu was so worried he smoked three pipes a day.

Old Man Lu and Shen Jin's stepmother discussed it and decided: one was illiterate, the other a lazybones.

Wouldn't they make a perfect match?

Shen Jin and Lu Yao got married, and everyone had something to say.

"A lazybones and an illiterate guy, now that's a perfect match."

"One's poor, the other's stupid. Let's see how long it takes them to beg on the street."

Years later, Shen Jin pointed at Lu Yao. "So you were lying! All the shops on this street are yours?"

Lu Yao slapped his finger away. "And you have the nerve to talk! Why is your name on this Tsinghua University acceptance letter?"

Shen Jin's eyes widened. "You said you just lazed around at home, but you'd secretly been going out to do business?"

Lu Yao pursed her lips. "You said you were going out to collect protection money, but you'd secretly been going to the bookstore to study?"

Lu Yao: "What? You're a transmigrator from the Great Zhou dynasty, a crown prince with an encyclopedic mind? And you spent three or four years in literacy classes?"

Shen Jin: "What? You're a transmigrator from the year 2000, a self-made businesswoman? And you kept pretending to be poor, saying your pockets were emptier than your face?"

Shen Jin was dumbfounded. "I thought you were supposed to be lazy!"

Lu Yao was dumbfounded. "I thought you were supposed to be illiterate!"

The people who'd been enjoying the show were even more dumbfounded.
