The Family in the Apartment Block

Just as her parents' hair is turning white, Lin Qian's family finally escapes their dilapidated rental and moves into the elevator-equipped apartment they've dreamed of all their lives.

But on the first day in their new home, Lin Qian dies suddenly from overwork. As her consciousness drifts back, she is overwhelmed by regrets for herself and her family. Her parents regret missing so many opportunities in life. The whole family lived in a cramped, shabby apartment, toiling away like oxen just to scrape by. Their bodies were worn down, and their health was failing...

All Lin Qian can say is: If only I'd made money sooner and bought a house for my family sooner. We didn't even get to spend a single night in our new home.

When she opens her eyes again, she's back in the past.

The beautifully renovated apartment with an elevator is gone. The wooden building that had plagued the Lin family for over a decade, creaking whenever anyone stepped on it, has trapped Lin Qian once more.

A song from the rebroadcast of the 1998 Spring Festival Gala starts playing. Lin Qian pumps her fist, ready to work hard and change her parents' fate, determined to ride the wave of reform and opening-up to make a fortune. But her mother presses a lollipop into her hand. "Qianqian, eat your lollipop and remember to do your homework. Don't watch TV too late tonight. You have to be in bed by eight. The new school year starts soon, and you'll be in the second semester of sixth grade. You need to do well on your middle school entrance exams."

Lin Qian, reborn in the sixth grade of elementary school: "...I'm done for."

Her dad's current job as a truck driver still pays a decent wage. Her mom is a nurse at the factory clinic, and the factory won't close and lay off its workers for another two years. Their savings haven't yet been borrowed by a relative and left unpaid for twenty years. Her grandmother hasn't yet had an accident at work...

There's still time to change everything.

And her first priority now is getting into middle school!

★Tips: 1. The characters are all flawed, but this is a warm, slice-of-life story about a family striving together.
