Lu Zhaoxue transmigrated to the Great Yan dynasty at a terrible time. The soldiers in the border town were fighting the enemy, and the tavern her uncle ran hadn't had a customer in days.
She was utterly disheartened. Of all the places she could have transmigrated to, why did it have to be somewhere torn apart by war? But her uncle, who had just finished a bowl of lamb soup and was now lazily sunbathing in a rocking chair, reassured her: "With the Duan Army here, Zhaoxue, you can rest easy."
On the night of the Lantern Festival, the Duan Army really did return victorious beneath the bright moon. The general at their head had a clear, pleasant voice, and asked her uncle for a bowl of rice wine.
With no need to leave her home behind, Lu Zhaoxue settled in to help at the tavern. But after the great battle, few merchants passed through, and business was poor. Her cousin was studying and needed to pay his tuition, while her uncle and aunt wore worried expressions every day.
So Lu Zhaoxue rolled up her sleeves and helped rebuild the tavern...
Later, the tavern became an inn where merchants traveling north and south stopped to rest. Diners came from far and wide, drawn by its reputation, and praised its food without reservation. The storyteller's performances became so popular that seats were impossible to get. The moment his clapper struck, the whole house erupted in cheers.
Duan Chuanliu had spent half his life on the battlefield. He thought that aside from his beloved sword and horse, nothing could compare with fine wine. He paid little attention to anything else.
But that Lantern Festival night, he couldn't remember how lovely the moonlight had been or how crisp the rice wine tasted. The only thing he remembered was the fleeting glimpse of her beside the carved window.
"That year, on the night of the Lantern Festival, under a moonless sky and howling wind, General Duan crept through the snow with only his sword and horse, charging alone into the enemy camp..."
The storyteller onstage had reached an exciting part. The audience below craned their necks and widened their eyes, waiting for what came next.
Young Shopkeeper Lu wove through the crowd and marched angrily toward the man leaning by the doorway, cracking sunflower seeds as he listened to the story.
"Duan Chuanliu! You climbed through my window again last night to steal my wine, didn't you?"
"No, no! I didn't!"
"Oh?"
"I climbed through the window, but I didn't steal any wine." But I did steal a kiss.
General Duan was dragged out by the collar.
The storyteller onstage had a sudden inspiration. Risking his job, he changed the story of the next performance to "The Great General Climbs Through the Green Window in the Dead of Night, and the Pretty Shopkeeper Rebukes Her Lover in Public."
From then on, every performance was packed.
