Sang Zhi is born into the Cai Sang Village of the Great Yan Dynasty and becomes the daughter of the village head. From a young age, she studies medicine under the county's old physician and grows up to become a female doctor.
She works hard every day, gathering herbs in the mountains and diligently studying at the clinic. She treats the sick and saves lives, and people across the surrounding villages know her as Doctor Sang and recognize her excellent medical skills.
After saving money for years, Sang Zhi is ready to open a little clinic of her own. But it turns out that her master and two senior fellow apprentices are all rather unreliable. Her master is so devoted to medicine and teaching his apprentices that he ignores everything else. Her senior uncle is huge and imposing, and can scare people away just by standing at the clinic entrance. He can't even keep the books straight. Her junior uncle looks like a dashing young gentleman and loves to wander the world with his medicine chest, disappearing for months at a time.
She nervously takes on the responsibility of running the clinic. When she reaches marrying age, her mother asks what kind of man she likes. Sang Zhi hugs her medical books and thinks about it for days before telling her mother, “Then how about that hunter surnamed Bai up in the mountains? He's a wonderful cook.”
On the day the Sang family sends a matchmaker to the Bai household, another matchmaker arrives at their home. She says the Bai family sent her to propose marriage to the Sang family.
Village Head Sang slaps his thigh. “Well, then, the match is made!”
