The earth trembled, sand filled the sky, and smoke drifted from the grave. A pale hand burst from the loosened soil and slapped against the blank tombstone.
Veins stood out on the back of the hand. A faint white light glimmered at the fingertips, like the fluttering wings of a butterfly, a thin sliver struggling to break free of a thick cocoon.
Lu Jizhou crawled out of the smoking grave, but collapsed after only a few steps. His spiritual power was spent, and he reverted to his true form.
When he opened his eyes again, a handsome face was right in front of him, sleeping soundly.
Lu Jizhou recognized him at once. This was Ji Shen, the Demon Realm's Venerable Lord, his archenemy who had ordered the three realms to hunt him down. More than a hundred years ago, Ji Shen had destroyed his family. Now that he had crawled out of hell, his first priority was to kill him.
But when he reached out, or rather, raised a paw, Lu Jizhou froze. His true form was a fluffy white dog, and his soft paw pad pressing against the man's broad chest posed no threat at all.
Ji Shen opened his eyes, half-asleep, and deftly pulled him into his arms. He rubbed his head. "Baby."
Lu Jizhou: "???"
There was no way Ji Shen didn't recognize his true form. Wanted posters showing both his human and animal forms were plastered everywhere under heaven and earth.
Perhaps sensing his stiffness, Ji Shen rubbed his chin over the top of his head and spoke again in a low, hoarse voice. "Don't like me calling you that?"
"Then, little one?"
Lu Jizhou: "!!!"
