When they first met, Pei Yan was huddled in a corner of the cold palace courtyard. He was clearly a child, yet his eyes were like poisoned blades.

The pastries Song Mingchuan offered were slapped to the ground. The little wolf cub sneered at him.

"Are you going to poison me too?"

Meeting those eyes, Song Mingchuan fell silent for a moment, then gently unfastened his cloak and wrapped it around the shivering cub as he looked at him.

"No. I am your teacher."

Later, Song Mingchuan held Pei Yan's hand and taught him to hold his wrist aloft as he wrote. The wolf-hair brush left elegant strokes bleeding across the rice paper.

"A ruler should be like a pine or cypress, standing firm beneath heaven and earth even when battered by wind and snow."

Later still, on the night the new emperor ascended the throne, Song Mingchuan was pressed against a desk. The hem of the bright yellow imperial robe tangled with the edge of his silver-white clothes as the young emperor held him fast and laughed softly in his ear.

"Teacher, you taught me the way of a ruler. Why don't I teach you today how to draw a line and make it a prison?"

The "husband" beside Lin An is wreathed in demonic energy. He is the Demon Emperor, born once in a millennium in the demon realm. His arms remain wrapped around Lin An as always, and his voice is gentle. "Your wife? He's clearly my wife."

His husband had been replaced.
