The chubby hatchling measures with his little hands:

"Am I supposed to jump up and hit his knees?"

The System never jokes. Even a four-head-tall hatchling has to be cannon fodder.

Warren steps on a mechanical arm, wears a voice changer, and pretends to be huge while reciting standard cannon fodder lines to the blind test subject:

"You useless trash, you can't even withstand the killing virus. So much for being a mere marshal."

Then he gives him a shot of nutrient solution, the cold kind!

"A vile rebel like you should have been executed by slow slicing long ago, streamed for every insect in the empire to watch!"

Then he sets up a camera that isn't connected to the network, stitches the insect's wounds without anesthesia!

"The only thing you've got going for you is your face. If you weren't so unruly and disobedient, being a female slave wouldn't be out of the question. I should have seen you in my sire's bed."

Then he pats the test subject's pale cheek, wipes away the female insect's tears, and gives an especially wicked grin!

"Eat up! A criminal female deserves nothing but slop!"

Then he chooses the freshest ingredients to make the most disgusting bland food, seasoning it with just a little salt!

Despite the cannon fodder's "cruel" treatment, the test subject is not roused to fight back and does not blow up the laboratory as he does in the story.

Instead, he grows accustomed to life in the lab, quietly and gloomily waiting for death to come each day.

Now both the System and Warren are at a loss.

In desperation, Warren cuts away the female insect's painful memories, turning him into a blank slate who will be easier to fool.

"Quick, call me Master."

The four-head-tall chubby hatchling stops pretending, points to himself, and introduces himself to the sight-restored female insect:

"...Baby?"

Confusion fills the female insect's blue eyes, and he shows the chubby hatchling a tenderness he has never shown before.

"I'm your Master, your Master!"

The chubby hatchling isn't satisfied. He gestures emphatically.

"I have... a hatchling?"

The female insect's beautiful, divine-looking face lights up with immense joy. For the first time, vitality enters his eyes, driving away his overwhelming desire to die.

"..."

The cannon fodder hatchling opens his mouth, closes it, then opens it again, but he just can't bring himself to correct him.

Forget it. We can each call the other whatever we want. Even an evil cannon fodder hatchling can be a Master!

At least he kept the test subject alive! And raised him big and strong!

Ax was once the Imperial Marshal and one of the first leaders of the rebel army that tried to overthrow the male insect empire.

After his capture, the best fate awaiting him was death. Before he died, he planned to take the accursed laboratory down to hell with him.

Then, suddenly, a strange male insect entered the laboratory.

The male insect brought him delicious food but called it slop. He repaired his body but called it torture. The male insect's words were harsh, yet his fingertips fell as lightly as feathers, trailing a soft fragrance.

This male insect seemed crazy, seriously crazy. Ax decided to observe him for a few more days.

Years later, he would be profoundly grateful for that decision.
