Feeling guilty, Samuel took the injured Suter home when he had regressed to a childlike state, and cared for him as if he were a hatchling.

He instinctively tried to get away, but Suter held him fast in the small space of his embrace.

The next moment, a scorching kiss landed on his lips. Suter bit down gently and said, "Stop treating me like a hatchling."

Only then did Samuel realize that their cohabitation, which had begun out of guilt, had long since changed into something else.

Everything was in disarray.

But on damp, rainy nights, Slade would wake with a start, press his forehead to Bohnser's, and murmur in a daze:
