Check out my profile for the prequel, "Working in Gotham", a completed 2-million-character novel that's ready to binge.
Every day, Katherine opened her eyes and went to work at Wayne Enterprises. When she got tired, she went home to Wayne Manor. And when she closed her eyes, she fell onto Gotham's richest man.
One day, she finally couldn't take it anymore and started wondering what the meaning of life was.
"Madam, if I may remind you, strictly speaking, you aren't actually human," Alfred said, quietly pouring Ceylon tea into her cup from a teapot.
At the same time, the old gentleman had to rescue a plate of cookies from the hand of the man of the house reaching over from beside him.
"You've already had three. That's all you're allowed for tomorrow, Master Bruce."
Bruce pretended to admire the view and awkwardly moved his hovering hand over to the toast instead.
Katherine was eating breakfast when the alarm on her phone began ringing like a funeral bell, pounding at her heart again and again.
"It's time to go to work, darling," Bruce said cautiously.
"I'm not in the mood. I don't want to go." Katherine turned off her phone, looking utterly resigned.
"I'll buy you a Hermes bag."
"No."
"I'll buy you a Bugatti."
"No."
"I'll buy you a manor. You have to want that."
"No."
Wayne Manor had been especially quiet these past few days. The children were all busy with their own things and wouldn't be back until the weekend.
"What's the point of raising kids?" Katherine sat on the sofa with her arms crossed.
Bruce gave her a helpless look. "Who says raising kids is pointless? It's incredibly useful."
"Then tell me, who's home? Who's going to run the company?" Katherine tossed the cushion aside and angrily turned away. Bruce had no choice but to move from the sofa across from her to the one right in front of her.
"What about Dick?" Katherine stared at him.
"He's in Bludhaven, catching traffic violators."
Katherine kept staring. "Jason?"
"He's at college in New York, and then he gets into underground fights for people. I mean... runs his security company."
Katherine hugged the cushion again. "What about Tim and Damian?"
"Tim went to do an interview with Clark. They're playing paparazzi."
"Damian went to Lex to shake him down for money. There's a shareholders' meeting at LexCorp."
Katherine finally seemed to calm down a little. "This family really has made something of itself in its own way."
"What about Leah and Lina?"
Bruce took a box from beneath the table, opened it, and set it in front of Katherine. "One travels the world performing surgeries and shopping along the way. The other is a supermodel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and works on research with Cohen on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays."
Inside the box was an enormous pink diamond.
As Katherine put on the pink diamond, the two of them hugged.
With their backs turned to each other, they each took out their phones and sent a message to their respective family group chats, without the other in them: "Come back quick. Katherine/Bruce is going to divorce me."
