When a Ginseng Spirit Marries a Disabled Tycoon

Sheng Mian is a ginseng spirit born after the founding of the country.

Good news: He's been able to take human form for six months!

Bad news: He went down the mountain to repay a debt of gratitude and, through a twist of fate, married a two-legged beast.

Not only is the person he's marrying a male two-legged beast, he's said to be gloomy and ill-tempered, with no one daring to go near him. His legs don't work well either, so he can only get around in a wheelchair. He often takes tonics, including ginseng.

Don't eat me! How could you eat me?

Terrified, Sheng Mian the ginseng spirit went through with the marriage, expecting to be eaten. But then he found that his supposedly terrifying two-legged-beast husband sat all alone in his wheelchair...

The curtains were always drawn tight, letting in no light. Darkness and shadows swallowed Zhou Chengyan. His face was gaunt and his gaze empty. Day after day, he was like a walking corpse.

Sheng Mian froze.

He couldn't help moving closer. Slowly crouching down, he gave him a big smile:

"Hello, Mr. Zhou. I'm Sheng Mian. From now on, we're family."

He seems like a rather pitiful two-legged beast. If he doesn't eat me, I'll do my best to save him...

Zhou Chengyan planned to end his life at thirty-five, until the young man who'd been sent to marry him entered his barren world.

On their wedding night, the young man took his hand, his eyes curving as he smiled and said they were family now. His smile was dazzling, impossible to look away from. But Zhou Chengyan felt like a rat in a gutter seeing the sun, too afraid to look or even think about it.

Even though, for the first time, he had a reason to keep living.

Later, the young man was always smiling brightly, innocent and carefree, saying he'd cure him and protect him for the rest of his life.

Who would believe such a lie?

Nobody could love a cripple, especially someone who was no longer young. The fine lines at the corners of his eyes made Zhou Chengyan feel inferior, and his disability made him ashamed.

And his wife was far too young.

Zhou Chengyan thought Sheng Mian would hate him one day.

He didn't deserve Sheng Mian's affection. Someone as vibrant as Sheng Mian should leave as soon as possible, and the day he left would be the day Zhou Chengyan died.

...Yet the mere thought of Sheng Mian leaving made Zhou Chengyan feel that death would be preferable to life.

Torment and pain followed him like shadows, but day after day, Sheng Mian never left. His legs even grew stronger with each passing day. Then one day, the young man in his bed was gone, replaced by a ginseng plant with its roots sticking up.

Yun Huan is the son of a landlord in a remote corner of Jiangnan.

He envies his classmate Yan Xuqing, who may be a commoner but is as handsome as an orchid and a jade tree, and writes beautiful essays. Yun Huan picks on him from time to time, but Yan Xuqing ignores him and treats him like a clown, which only makes Yun Huan hate him more.

Until one day, Yun Huan has a dream.

In the dream, Yan Xuqing is the protagonist of a story, and not a commoner at all, but a prince who has lived among the people for more than a decade. Soon, the palace will identify him by a token and take him back. From then on, he'll rise all the way to the throne.

And Yun Huan is nothing but an insignificant side character.

His looks, manners, and everything else are better than Yan Xuqing's. Why can't he be the prince?

Consumed by jealousy, Yun Huan schemes to seduce Yan Xuqing.

Unexpectedly, the man who once treated him as if he were nothing turns red-eyed and crazed, demanding more from him. His dangerous, husky voice is nothing like his usual cold indifference.

"Yun Huan, you'll regret this..."

Regret it?

He'd regret it more if he failed to make something of himself!

In the heat of passion, Yun Huan endures the pain and steals Yan Xuqing's token. Then, without hesitation, he heads to the palace and takes Yan Xuqing's place as the prince.

As a prince, he enjoys the affection of the emperor father, the crown prince brother, the general cousin... Everyone dotes on him out of guilt. Though Yun Huan is frightened, he also enjoys the splendor of being admired by all.

But it doesn't last. Yan Xuqing comes to the capital for the palace examination. Fearing his deception will be exposed, Yun Huan uses the same old trick and silences Yan Xuqing once again with sex.

Day after day, Yan Xuqing really does keep quiet.

Then comes a palace coup. The crown prince accuses Yun Huan of treason, his mother's entire family is sentenced to execution, and Yun Huan is condemned to a brutal punishment.

With his eyes swollen from crying and in a miserable state, Yun Huan goes to find Yan Xuqing, hoping he'll help him explain things because of their intimacy. But when the palace gates open, he sees Yan Xuqing standing beside the crown prince.

Yan Xuqing stands tall and graceful, looking at him with cool detachment. Everyone in the Eastern Palace respectfully calls him the "Chief Strategist."

So Yan Xuqing was never a prince. So it was all a scheme. Yun Huan was the only fool who believed it.

On a moonless night, Yun Huan died.

When he opens his eyes again, he has become a male consort in the emperor's harem, with a face much like the one he had in his previous life. Outside his bedchamber, a palace servant loudly announces the emperor's arrival.
