The Joy of a New Marriage

The first time Liang Yu saw Ji Xunchu, he was drinking his troubles away.

They said it was over a woman he couldn't have.

She wondered: Could even a man that handsome have a woman he couldn't get?

Later, she discovered that the man was the godlike uncle her boyfriend was always talking about.

Liang Yu's boyfriend was from a wealthy family, more or less.

Her wealthy boyfriend seemed to be planning an alliance through marriage with a younger, richer woman.

Indignant, Liang Yu turned her sights on the legendary uncle.

She thought her marriage to Ji Xunchu really would be what he said it was: a mutually beneficial arrangement.

But she never expected him to make use of her in even more unspeakable ways.

One morning, Liang Yu heard the phone ring in a daze and answered. The caller demanded to know who she was to Ji Xunchu.

Realizing she'd picked up the wrong phone, she hurried to explain.

Ji Xunchu took the phone and explained in a sleepy, just-woken-up voice, "She's my wife."

Liang Yu had a suspicion and asked, "Was that your white moonlight?"

Ji Xunchu glared at her, then leaned down and bit her lip.

When she went back to the bar where she'd first seen Ji Xunchu drinking, this time with a friend,

Liang Yu realized she could no longer be completely indifferent to who his white moonlight was.

The bartender was the same. Her friend asked if he knew who Ji Xunchu's white moonlight was.

The bartender glanced at Liang Yu, then smiled at her friend. "Sorry, I can't reveal Mr. Ji's secrets."

Her friend nodded toward Liang Yu. "You can't even tell his wife?"

The bartender looked at Liang Yu, his expression inscrutable. "Mr. Ji's wife?"

Her friend replied, "That's right."

After a long silence, the bartender set the freshly mixed Encounter beside Liang Yu.

He smiled at her. "The next time I see Mr. Ji, I'll congratulate him on getting what he wished for."

Ji Xunchu had always been a staunch materialist. After she walked into his life that day, he began to believe in destiny.
