Zhao Qingshan is a hunter from out of town who settles in Xiaohe Village and lives alone in the woods behind the village.
He's tall and burly, with a scar slanting across his right eye. He looks terrifying, so everyone in the village avoids him.
Zhao Qingshan doesn't really care. As long as he can hunt pheasants and rabbits to sell for a little money and put food on the table, that's enough. He doesn't need to earn much. As long as he doesn't starve, he's fine.
One day, however, the village's mute young man comes to his door and says he wants to marry him. Zhao Qingshan thinks he's better off alone and that another person would just be a burden, so he turns him down.
The two aren't acquainted. The young man just likes to come near Zhao Qingshan's place when he goes into the mountains to gather wild greens and firewood. Since everyone is afraid to even live nearby because of Zhao Qingshan's fearsome reputation, there are more wild greens and berries here than elsewhere.
The next time Zhao Qingshan sees the young man, his exposed arm is covered in purple bruises. His compassion gets the better of him, and he pays ten taels of silver to marry the young man and bring him home.
From that day on, the stove in the house is never cold, the food is always hot, and someone is there to mend his clothes.
Zhao Qingshan decides having a little husband is pretty nice. He goes hunting while his little husband stays home to embroider and weave. Zhao Qingshan stops drifting through life in a daze, hunts wild boars and roe deer, and earns money to nourish his little husband.
"Q-Qingshan..."
When his little husband calls his name, Zhao Qingshan feels that everything in his past has been just a passing cloud. His little husband is the one who gives his life purpose.
Simple meals, three times a day. Gathering wildflowers in spring, picking mushrooms in summer, harvesting and storing food in autumn and winter. Peace and safety through all four seasons.
