Yao Ran's ideal life was to avoid working and be a cat. The very next day, she became a stray calico.
She got it now: when making a wish, be sure to specify the breed and the living conditions.
Life as a stray was rough. Dogs chased her, children drove her off, and cat abusers set their sights on her. Just when she was finally rescued, she found out her rescuer was Jiang Tang.
Who was Jiang Tang? The classic neighbor's kid, the nightmare benchmark Yao Ran had been measured against her whole life.
Yao Ran had a clear plan: turn back into a human, get away from Jiang Tang, and never let Jiang Tang find out this cat was her.
But she soon realized something was off about Jiang Tang.
Yao Ran bit her finger. Jiang Tang didn't pull away. Instead, she pushed her finger into Yao Ran's mouth. "Are you teething, little kitty?"
Yao Ran scratched the back of her hand. Jiang Tang gazed at her adoringly, as if she'd accomplished something amazing. "Wow, you're so good at that. How about one more?"
What made Yao Ran completely lose it was what happened after she'd spent some time as a cat.
In her heart: I hate her.
Her body: already kneading biscuits on Jiang Tang.
Later, Yao Ran discovered Jiang Tang's secret.
In Jiang Tang's study was a crayon drawing signed more than a decade ago. It showed a calico cat with markings identical to those on Yao Ran's current feline body. The next day, the words "my little cat" had been crossed out, and "mine" written beside them in red.
That night, Jiang Tang held her against her chest, her lips brushing the top of Yao Ran's head as she whispered, "Little kitty, did you know? I met you once, a long time ago."
After turning back into a human, Yao Ran fled in the middle of the night, moved, changed her number, and went into hiding.
But every time she closed her eyes at night, all she could see was Jiang Tang.
No, she had to find that pervert Jiang Tang and settle the score.
Jiang Tang opened the door. The bite marks on her neck hadn't faded, and she looked like a ghost who hadn't slept in days. "You can hate me all you want, but don't stop using me. I'm really useful, I swear."
Yao Ran: "...Are you crazy? Do you know how perverted that sounds?"
Jiang Tang: "I know, but it's true."
Yao Ran pushed her over the threshold by the shoulder and licked the red, swollen wound on her neck. "Forget it. I'm crazy too."
Jiang Tang fell onto the sofa and looked up at her. "Then use me."
Yao Ran couldn't help biting her.
Jiang Tang shivered with pleasure.
"Little kitty. Mine."
Reader's note:
1. One has a strong sense of self but is starved for love; the other has almost no sense of self and is a pervert.
2. Mostly a light, sweet romance, with a little darkness and twistedness. Happy ending.
Theme: Love is first and foremost about giving, not taking.
