Zhao Hanyue was assigned a two-person transmigration-into-a-book mission, but traffic delayed her on the way.
By the time she reached the company, her partner had already gone ahead. They had left her a code phrase, telling her to enter the book's world and use it to identify them.
Things got off to a rocky start. The space-time tunnel jolted so violently that Zhao Hanyue felt as if she'd been tumbled around inside a washing machine hundreds of times. The moment she landed, her eyes spinning like incense coils, she flopped onto the ground.
She retched several times before finally recovering, only to be startled by the dark, terrifying scenery around her.
She was surrounded by sheer cliffs, with only a sliver of sky overhead. Jagged rocks looked like grimacing ghost faces. On the one patch of relatively flat ground sat a young man in black.
His long black hair hung loose, his face was pale, and his robe was half open. He looked like a beautiful male ghost.
But his feet were bare, so he was human. A red cord with copper coins tied around it encircled his ankle. When the wind blew, the coins jingled prettily.
Zhao Hanyue and the young man met eyes. His manner was strange, but he was undeniably handsome. Her partner was a cute guy, too.
She gave the code phrase.
"Palace Imperial Liquor?"
The young man spun the copper pendant at his waist and looked at her. The crimson cord swung in an arc. His beautiful, almost unreal eyes watched her for a long moment before he drawled,
"One hundred and eighty yuan a glass."
Delighted, Zhao Hanyue hurried forward and clasped both his hands.
"Partner, I'm looking forward to working with you!"
Her partner smiled, red lips and white teeth gleaming.
Zhao Hanyue's heart pounded wildly.

A few days ago, the company had received a commission: the villain of a xianxia novel had gone berserk, nearly slaughtering the entire protagonist group. The client wanted the company to eliminate him and restore peace to the world.
The company sent Zhao Hanyue and assigned her a partner.
This mission was no small matter. She and her partner would have to work closely together.
After identifying each other, Zhao Hanyue and her partner came up with a plan to kill the villain. Her partner would stay in the shadows while she acted in the open, splitting up to approach from two directions.
She disguised herself and infiltrated the villain's territory alone.
But why was the villain just like her partner, so fussy and difficult, and just as unwilling to wear shoes?
It was only a personal quirk, so Zhao Hanyue didn't think much of it. After he fell asleep, she lit some sleeping incense, drew the knife from her sleeve, lifted the bed curtains, and brought it down
Then Zhao Hanyue saw his face.
Her eyes widened in shock, and the hand gripping the knife handle suddenly went slack.
This was bad!
How could the partner who had answered the code phrase, the one she'd gotten along with so intimately, possibly be the villain of this world?
The villain in black placed the knife back in her palm and whispered in her ear, "Didn't you come here to kill me? Why can't you bring yourself to do it?"
Zhao Hanyue wanted to cry.
The danger level was way too high. Could she just quit?
Zhao Hanyue spent the next two or three days on tenterhooks.
A few days later, the villain came looking for her.
In the dead of night, he jingled the coins tied around his ankle as he walked over. He leaned against the side of her bed, gently tightened his hand around her throat, and murmured, eyes hazy with drink,
"That day, you said you loved me. Could you say it again?"
