Xiang Zhan remembers that her fiancé died seven days ago.

But it seems everyone has forgotten about it.

On the seventh day after his death, she received a call from him again.

The heating in the top-floor office at the company's headquarters was turned up as high as it could go, but the chill still lingered.

The man lowered his head and adjusted his glasses. His long, pale fingers held a fountain pen as he signed the section about family on her end-of-term report.

Xiang Zhan was silent for a few seconds, then asked, "So, you're dead, right?"

"..."

At the sound of her voice, the man raised his eyes.

Under the fluorescent lights, they gleamed with a slick, inorganic sheen unlike anything human, like a dead fish's eyes. He didn't blink for several minutes.

"That's right," he said softly. "I was worried about you, so I crawled back."

"Is that so bad?"

*

Well, then.

There was nothing wrong with being dead, either.

Xiang Zhan picked up the air-conditioner remote and turned the heat up even higher.
