Childhood friends / Marriage first, love later / Rekindled romance
Female general x sickly scholar
(1)
Yu Xianzhi has guarded the Binghe Pass in Tianzhou for thirteen years. In all that time, she has never seen Zheng Xiangwan.
They have been apart for thirteen years, and she has forgotten what Zheng Xiangwan looks like. All she remembers is that he liked a particular liquor called "Wild Geese of Longing."
In the ninth year of Cheng'en, the emperor issues an edict summoning Yu Xianzhi and her troops back to the capital.
Yu Xianzhi obeys the order and sets out for the capital, but on the way she receives the news that Zheng Xiangwan has been beheaded in the street.
The heavens send him off, and all the people weep.
Before Zheng Xiangwan died, the thing clutched in his hand was the seal Yu Xianzhi had carved for him herself when they were young.
They had known each other since childhood and been married for twenty years.
Only on the day Zheng Xiangwan died did Yu Xianzhi finally realize that she had never done anything for him.
She had never even said, "I loved you."

The court breaks its word, leaving the Red Tassel Army utterly disillusioned.
After Zheng Xiangwan's death, Yu Xianzhi defies the imperial order and refuses to return to the capital. On her way back to Tianzhou, she picks up a sickly man.
He's one foot in the grave, barely alive. All he does is eat and sleep. He's not only lazy, but also full of opinions about Yu Xianzhi's decisions and loves to offer advice.
Yu Xianzhi: "Why should I keep you?"
Sickly man: "Listen, you can't grow this sorghum like that. You have to do it my way."
Yu Xianzhi: "Go chop some firewood."
Sickly man: "Sure."
■ General x civil official.
The female lead can be summed up in one word: cool!
The male lead in three: sickly man!
An alternate-history Wei-Jin setting, with countless authorial liberties.
Flashbacks ahead.
"There is no place in this world without its turmoil. Every day brings twelve hours of storms."
The title comes from "Partridge Sky: A Verse," by Huang Tingjian of the Song dynasty.
■ [Important]
This story has four volumes and features an ensemble of women. The protagonist of each volume is a woman, each with a different identity, status, and personality. The point of view varies.
The blurb focuses on the main pairing, Yu Xianzhi x Zheng Xiangwan: a faithful, monogamous couple with a happy ending.
But from the third volume onward, the secondary pairings will play a bigger role, and there will be more than one, so don't expect otherwise.
Readers who are extremely devoted to the female lead or male lead, or very particular about fidelity or a balance of sweet and angsty content, are advised not to start this story, or they may find it painful later.
This is quite a long story, and where it goes depends on fate. If you don't mind that, dear readers young and old, I warmly invite you to join me for a little drink.
