Beautiful, gloomy female ghost x jaded office worker who's given up on life
Xu Wuning has just graduated from university, has no money to her name, and moves into an apartment near her workplace that's supposedly available for a bargain-basement rent.
It's fully furnished, luxurious, and in a great location. Why is such a great place impossible to rent out, leaving the landlord with no choice but to offer it at half price? The agent doesn't tell her, and she doesn't care. She's only interested in the cheap rent.
She'd even put up with a haunting. What's scarier than being broke?
On her first day there, Xu Wuning's dog barks endlessly at a patch of empty air. A teacup on the table drops without warning and shatters right in front of the dog. It stops barking and shrinks into a corner, trembling like a leaf.
At eleven that night, the locked bedroom window starts rattling nonstop. A chilly wind blows through, raising goosebumps on her skin.
She props herself up. Her pajamas hang loose, the collar slipping below her collarbone and exposing her pale skin to the air.
“If there's a ghost here, help me close the window. We're roommates, after all. Don't pull weird stunts to scare me.” She has to work tomorrow, and she feels like she might be more resentful than the ghost.
The window closes.
At one in the morning, the power goes out, and the little lamp that had been on suddenly goes dark.
At two, wind roars across the balcony, blowing a flowerpot onto the floor.
At three, Xu Wuning feels something pressing down on her.
She lifts an eyelid and discovers that her pajamas have somehow been undone. The cold, slick sensation on her chest makes her scalp tingle.
She has sleep paralysis.
In the literal sense.
