You Dairan didn't like Mo Cannan.
She didn't like this "other people's kid," someone who had barely ever appeared in her real life, yet was impossible to avoid or ignore.
From relatives and family friends, she'd heard all about his outstanding twenty-year academic career until she was sick of it.
As she remembered it, they'd met just once, on a November day when the first snow was drifting down. Adults and children alike crowded around to see him. You Dairan hid far away, but when they actually came face-to-face, she smiled brightly and pretended to call him the wrong name without meaning to. "Hello, Brother Can'shen."
Mo Cannan froze for a moment.
He was so clever, he must have seen at a glance that she didn't like him.
Yes, You Dairan didn't like Mo Cannan. He was a person who was both gentle and not gentle at all.
How do you define gentleness?
A friend said, "Someone who adds clothes or tucks you in, cheers you up when you're sad, and comforts you when you cry. That's gentleness."
You Dairan was puzzled. "Does tucking someone in count as being gentle?"
"Of course."
She waved her hand at once. "Then he definitely isn't gentle. All he does is pull off my blanket."
"I cry, and he says I look pretty."
"I smile, and he pinches my cheeks. If I don't smile, he worries I'm holding it in and will make myself sick."
PS: Mo Can (cān) Nian is deliberately pronounced Mo Can (shen) Nian by Dairan. From that point on, the name is marked to show the difference.
