A heroine who pretends to be cold but has twice the capacity for empathy x a hero who seems like a cheerful puppy but is secretly a gloomy cynic
Do you know what a god is?
Those were the only seven words in her mind as she opened her eyes amid a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood.
Seated high above the clouds, looking down upon the world, she had witnessed families torn apart and homes destroyed. She had seen children yearning to care for parents who were already gone, and white-haired parents burying their children.
Even gods could accumulate karmic burdens. As punishment for her coldly watching it all happen, the Supreme God condemned her to become the kind of mortal she despised most, subject to birth, aging, sickness, and death, and to the seven emotions and six desires.
Ji Heran stared blankly at the sky, her feelings tangled, until a pair of slender, knuckled hands dug her out of the rubble.
"Are you still alive?"
An unfamiliar feeling welled up inside her: gratitude. How irritating.
The person who saved her was named Qu Shu. He was sentimental and compassionate toward all under heaven. The two of them saw the suffering in the world and clung to each other, weeping. Qu Shu resolved to do good and bring smiles to everyone in the world.
Ji Heran, now homeless: I'm in!
A new tavern opened in Qixian County. The owner was a handsome young gentleman, and the waiter was a pretty young woman. The wine they served was rich and mellow, brimming with all the flavors of life, both joy and sorrow. One cup of clear wine could make this fleeting life feel like a dream.
Buy a jug of their wine and they would help you fulfill one wish, as long as it was within their power. At first, no one believed it. Then the first person came, then the second, and soon more and more people flocked to the tavern.
One day, a dead sparrow lay in front of the tavern. Ji Heran pretended not to see it, but in her mind she pictured a tiny, helpless bird, separated from its parents when young, with no one to care for it, dying far from home.
It was so pitiful that tears sprang to her eyes.
A figure suddenly rushed out, sobbing with every word.
Ji Heran: Never mind, the owner will give it a proper burial!
At dinner, Ji Heran stared at the roasted sparrow in front of her, deep in thought. This person... sure knows how to be two-faced.
