Clear-headed, decisive little ghost girl vs. an aloof, sharp-tongued, secretly clingy wolfdog of a Commandant

A Chao is a ghost. She's lost her memories, works hard, and hopes to earn an early chance at reincarnation. She's a good ghost.

"You still have unfinished business in the mortal world and have committed too many sins. Your reincarnation application is denied!"

After receiving this reply from the underworld for who knows how many times, A Chao finally gives up. Fine, fine. Who could resist being a lazy little salted fish?

She sees the Living Fiend save someone by stabbing a wooden chopstick straight into a criminal's palm. Blood sprays as screams ring through Chang'an.

A Chao is no longer calm. How can such a handsome gentleman be called a Living Fiend? He's clearly a living Bodhisattva!

"I swear, I saved him because it was the right thing to do, not because I was seduced by his looks." Seeing him beset by evil spirits, A Chao can't help stepping in to save him.

And then...

A Chao looks at the legs she's grown and cries to the heavens: "Can someone tell me why I've turned into a human?"

Fine, fine. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. How hard can it be to play the dim-witted young madam of the merchant Song family?

A wicked mother in the household? No problem, she'll bring her down. Her grandmother dislikes her? No problem, she has a way to deal with that. Her elder sisters are jealous? So what, they can be jealous all they like. Her two elder brothers dote on her? Great, A Chao always listens to her brothers.

That petty Living Fiend of a Commandant, is it really such a big deal to ask him for a hand? Is there any need to target her at every turn? He even says in front of her brother, "Brother Song's praise for his sister does seem to come with a certain personal bias."

Jiang Yici watches her play dumb and eat her way through the Song family. Every so often, he even has to point things out to that not-so-bright Song brother. The words "Your sister isn't stupid. She's very clever" may as well be stamped on his forehead.

All for nothing...

"My lord, I'm actually useful. I can see ghosts!"

"Oh, I know."

"My lord, I actually killed you in my past life. Did you know that?"

"Mm... I know that too."

After A Chao atones for what she did in her previous life...

1. The main plot comes first, one-on-one romance, mostly set in the mortal world. Not a cultivation novel, but it has a touch of supernatural elements.

2. Alternate history. Please don't nitpick the details.

3. Happy ending, sweet with some angst, past-life and present-life plot.

Wen Ling receives a secret report from her organization: the Xihe Military Governor may be the assassination target they've been searching for over many years. Given the mission, she enters the Pei residence disguised as a maid deeply in love with the Military Governor.

As the past unfolds, she realizes that the person beside her is the true assassination target her organization seeks. Yet here, Wen Ling receives a level of affection she's never known before, and her assassination mission is on the verge of failure.

Wen Ling carries a tray of poisoned pastries, ready to knock on the Military Governor's door. The next moment, that familiar figure appears before her once again. There is not a trace of amusement in his eyes now, only anger and disappointment.

Without a word, he tosses the pastries into the bushes and walks away without looking back.

Wen Ling clutches her skirt, appearing helpless, but can only smile bitterly inside. She never intended for anyone to eat those pastries. She was simply handing him the means to expose her with her own hands.

After her identity is revealed, Wen Ling waits for him to take revenge. She never expects the pampered young lord to humble himself and beg her to stay. He faces every storm for her alone and clears the endless brambles from her path.

Later, the young lord, covered in wounds, brings down the so-called organization and staggers toward her. "Can you stay by my side forever now?"

"I've always been by your side."

Aspiration: Everyone is born with a purpose. Whether flower or leaf, we all have a reason to exist.
