Gu Ci'an transmigrates into a book.
He ends up inside a novel he's read before.
The good news: He's read the book.
The bad news: He didn't finish it.
In the book, the original owner is an idle regent who wanders around making brief appearances. He's neither the villain who kills off the protagonists nor a disposable extra used for target practice.
For Gu Ci'an, a 21st-century wage slave who died suddenly from overwork, this is "the best deal ever!"
But something seems a little off.
"Your Highness, it's time for morning court."
Gu Ci'an looks outside. It's not even light yet!
"Your Highness, it's time to handle the letters."
Gu Ci'an opens a drawer and finds it packed full.
"Your Highness... Your Highness..."
Gu Ci'an wants to die. He just wants to lie flat and slack off.
"Your Highness, the poison you ordered me to give the Emperor has been administered."
Gu Ci'an: "Oh... What?"
The next second, several men in black bind him hand and foot and haul him back to the Emperor's bedchamber.
"Wasn't the regent supposed to be highly skilled in martial arts?"
Gu Ci'an closes his eyes, not wanting to say a word.
When he opens them again, the Emperor is sitting in a chair, watching him with a cool expression. In his hand is a cup of wine, which seems to be the poisoned cup his subordinate mentioned.
"My dear subject, do you have anything to explain?"
Gu Ci'an is dumbfounded.
Wasn't that what the villain in the book did?
So I am that damn villain????
In his previous life,
The Emperor, the general, and the Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard were all killed by the regent, Gu Ci'an.
He framed the Guardian General as a traitor, and the general died on the battlefield.
He arranged for an assassin to grievously wound the Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard, framed him for the injury, had him imprisoned, and schemed to have him killed.
He poisoned the Emperor with a slow-acting toxin day and night until he died of it, then went to the afterlife with him.
The three men wake up again and realize everything has returned to the beginning. Looking at Gu Ci'an before them, they sneer inwardly: "Just you wait. This time, I'll kill you before you can do anything!"
But later...
The Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard looks at the red-eyed Gu Ci'an before him. He doesn't even notice the burning sting on his cheek where Gu Ci'an just slapped him. Instead, he smiles and leans his face closer. "Give me one on the other side, too."
Gu Ci'an is stunned. What happened to the ruthless Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard the book promised? "Are you a damn pervert?!"
The general looks at Ci'an resting in bed and gently strokes his cheek, murmuring, "You owe me this. You're not going anywhere!"
Gu Ci'an pretends to sleep, thinking, "Can someone tell me!! Why is the upright and honorable general in the book also a complete lunatic!!!"
In the imperial study,
The Emperor looks at Gu Ci'an, sitting flustered on his lap, and kisses his collarbone with a smile. "My dear subject, you certainly are popular."
Gu Ci'an turns his head and sees...
Two petitions requesting permission to marry on the desk. Outside, two familiar voices sound:
"Your Majesty, the general and the Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard request an audience."
The Emperor looks at the man before him and smiles. "My dear subject, shall I let them in?"
Reader's guide:
1. The bottom transmigrates into a book, while everyone else is reborn.
2. The people killed in their previous lives were not killed by the male lead, but by characters from the original book. The male lead arrived later.
3. A lighthearted, silly style, with little political scheming.
4. Everyone's favorite.

Theme: I don't want to be the villain. I just want to lie flat.
