Yuan Fu hated people like Rong Jingwen the most.
She never said more than half of what she meant, and always held something back. They wore the same police uniform, but she didn't act like a police officer at all. She was more like one of those financiers from Central, turning questions into negotiations. Nothing she said could be faulted, but none of it could be trusted either.
Rong Jingwen couldn't stand Yuan Fu either.
The young lady of the Yuan family, a graduate of a prestigious university, had turned down a career as a top lawyer just to join the Serious Crimes Unit. She feared nothing and no one, and offended people openly, as if being able to answer to herself meant nothing in the world was beyond question.
The Serious Crimes Unit and the Financial Investigation Division rarely crossed paths, and their mutual dislike was confined to the comments of their mutual friends. That changed when a murder case led to a huge sum of illicit money, forcing them to work together.
One pursued the killer; the other followed the money.
Before they could find the person behind it all, they had already driven each other half mad.
·
At first, Rong Jingwen thought Yuan Fu was easy to deal with.
At work, she only talked in terms of evidence; in private, she avoided every subject. No matter how difficult a question was, she could always smile and talk her way around it.
Until Yuan Fu asked:
“Where did you get that wound?”
“Why didn't you answer my calls?”
“Rong Jingwen, do you think I wouldn't worry about you?”
Gradually, Rong Jingwen could no longer smile.
Yuan Fu also realized she was becoming more and more unreasonable.
She remembered Rong Jingwen's work hours, noticed unfamiliar perfume on her, and blocked the door whenever Rong Jingwen tried to casually brush something off, insisting on getting an answer.
In the end, Rong Jingwen was the first to cross the line.
She lowered her head and kissed Yuan Fu, then pressed her forehead against hers and whispered, “Lyd, don't come looking for me.”
·
Later, the lips that had kissed her slowly lost their color before her eyes.
Yuan Fu knelt on the ground, pressing hard against Rong Jingwen's wound. For the first time, she didn't want to ask about the truth, and didn't care who was right or wrong.
She only wanted Rong Jingwen to live.
