At the age of eight, Xiyu was poisoned by a rare toxin while saving her elder brother. The imperial physicians were helpless, and she remained frail for years. They said that unless the poison was cured, she would not live past eighteen.
After her elder brother ascended the throne, he sent people to escort Xiyu to Miaojiang in search of a cure.
It was said that Miaojiang was home to Red Leaf Village, where lived a master of gu control whose superb skills could cure any poison in the world.
At dusk, Xiyu arrived at Red Leaf Village, only to receive terrible news.
"You mean the old man? He's my grandpa. He died just last month."
A handsome, pale-skinned young man stood beneath fiery red maple leaves, dressed in indigo and adorned with silver ornaments.
His eyes were pitch-black, his lips a vivid red, yet his smile was aloof.
Just as Xiyu was about to leave in disappointment, the young man spoke again.
"But I'm even better than the old man. Though I do charge a very high price."
Xiyu and her companions had no other choice, so they decided to give him a try.
The young man's name was Si Wuyin. He was a brilliant talent among the gu masters of Red Leaf Village and even all of Miaojiang.
But he was also mean-spirited and eccentric, his moods shifting on a whim.
More importantly, he knew nothing of etiquette or human relationships.
He delighted in teasing and bullying her. It seemed to be his idea of fun.
If they had been in Chang'an, Xiyu would have had no choice but to marry him.
Xiyu thought he would ask for wealth and status at most, which the imperial family could afford.
Who knew that on the day her poison was cured, a silver snake coiled around Si Wuyin's wrist as he said flippantly, "For my payment, I want her."
"I want her to stay here in Red Leaf Village and keep me company."
The two men who had escorted her here, Minister Cui and General Cheng, flew into a rage and each came up with a solution.
One was a scheme, the other a show of force.
Xiyu chose the scheme.
She tricked Si Wuyin into drinking wine laced with a sleeping drug, then fled back to Chang'an.
Her elder brother, now emperor, had changed. Not only had he begun courting the powerful aristocratic clans he had once despised, he also planned to marry off his only sister to the Xie family to win them over.
Although the Xie family's fourth son was a fine young man.
Unable to resist her brother's pleas, she eventually agreed.
Yet in the dead of night, she often found herself thinking of Red Leaf Village, and of the Miaojiang boy who had pinched her cheek and asked what kissing felt like.
For a moment, her heart had fluttered.
At her engagement banquet with the Xie family's fourth son, the guests began collapsing one by one. Xiyu saw the young man again, dressed in indigo, his silver ornaments jingling.
"Breaking your promise comes with a price."
The boy smiled, and a silver snake shot toward her, binding her legs.
