Synopsis
“Hagi, you’ve been distracted this whole time. What are you looking at?”
Matsuda Jinpei sounded annoyed.
“Don’t tell me you’re trying to get out of it. We agreed you’d treat me to this meal.”
“Sorry, sorry. It’s just... that boy caught my attention.”
As he spoke, Hagiwara Kenji glanced to one side again.
Matsuda Jinpei followed his gaze.
Across the street stood a very unusual boy. His features were picture-perfect, and his slender figure was straight as bamboo. His flowing white hair fell to his waist, like the first pure snow of winter, sacred and beautiful.
Beneath his delicate brows was a pair of crystal-clear, sky-blue eyes, untouched by the world.
But what drew the most attention was the contrast between his gorgeous appearance and his aura: pure and sacred, cool and distant.
Matsuda Jinpei gave him a brief, disinterested glance. “What is it? Is something wrong with him?”
“No,” Hagiwara Kenji replied with a helpless shake of his head. “This is the third time I’ve seen him standing across the street.”
He was so striking that Hagiwara had remembered him at once. He was just curious because the boy kept wandering around in the same spot.
“So... I was wondering if he might be lost.”
“Huh?”
Matsuda Jinpei raised an eyebrow and looked back at the “girl” who seemed like the moon itself. He nudged Hagiwara Kenji with his elbow. “You going to hit on her?”
“I call it serving the public.”
Hagiwara Kenji gave him a playful wink with his violet eyes.
*
The white-haired boy drifted forward with the crowd.
He seemed to have no destination, simply letting himself be swept along.
Passersby couldn't help taking a second look. His appearance was exceptionally striking.
His white shirt hung loosely on him, its collar apparently too large. His delicate collarbones were completely exposed. His skin was fair and smooth, like flawless white porcelain, inviting someone to trace their own colors upon it.
Possessiveness and the urge to destroy quietly took root in people's hearts, like germs.
Suddenly, Mist felt someone tug at the hem of his clothes.
He turned his head a moment late, then slowly lowered his gaze.
“Big brother, your friend gave you this.”
A pair of small hands shoved a teddy bear into his arms.
The gesture was rather forceful, as if the child was afraid he might refuse.
The boy's eyes shifted. A friend? Gave it to him?
His mind seemed to freeze up, and he began thinking sluggishly.
The little hands reached out in front of him again.
The boy: ?
Their owner gave it a shake. “Big brother, candy.”
The boy paused for two seconds, then slowly lowered his head. “I don't see any.”
Five seconds passed.
The boy spoke again, bluntly. “There's no candy in your hand.”
The hand finally withdrew, and the boy's gaze fell on the little girl across from him.
She wore a beautiful princess dress, with a ponytail on each side of her head. She seemed angry, her brows furrowed. “Big brother, your friend said if I brought you the teddy bear, you'd give me candy as a reward.”
Rose red. What a gorgeous color...
Mist's thoughts strayed, then he seemed to remember something. He handed the bear back to her. “I don't have a friend like that.”
He spoke slowly, one word at a time.
The little girl: ?
She grew even angrier, putting her hands on her hips as if preparing to argue. “Big brother, you can't go back on your word! The teacher said good children keep their promises and do what they agree to do.”
The boy blinked and slowly lowered his head, looking a little hurt. “I didn't.”
He lowered his sky-blue eyes in distress, his long eyelashes fluttering like butterflies about to take flight.
“Besides... they wouldn't give me a bomb.”
“A bomb!!!”
Hagiwara Kenji and Matsuda Jinpei had only just walked over when they heard that. Their expressions changed instantly.
Mist raised his eyes and met Hagiwara Kenji's violet gaze. Confusion filled his eyes.
Who was he?
Matsuda Jinpei stepped forward and stared into Mist's eyes. In a stern voice, he asked, “What are you talking about? What bomb?”
Mist tilted his head, puzzled, and pointed at the teddy bear. “This.”
Hagiwara Kenji and Matsuda Jinpei exchanged a glance.
“Hey, kiddo, here's some candy. Could you tell us who gave you this teddy bear?”
Hagiwara Kenji quietly exchanged the candy for the bear, then bent down with a smile and asked where it had come from.
The little girl’s frown disappeared at once. She happily accepted the candy and solemnly tucked it into her pocket.
She pointed to a nearby cafe. “A man gave it to me. He said to give it to a big brother with white hair. He also said the big brother was really pretty and easy to spot in a crowd.”
Matsuda Jinpei carefully examined the teddy bear. He pulled open its zipper, revealing the bomb in plain sight. The culprit had clearly made little effort to hide it.
Matsuda Jinpei's expression darkened. “It's on a timer.”
“There's four minutes left.”
Hagiwara Kenji sent the little girl on her way and let his smile fall.
There wasn't enough time to call the police and get professional tools.
A bead of sweat slid down Hagiwara Kenji's forehead.
But...
They couldn't just sit there and do nothing.
As Hagiwara Kenji tried to think of a way to get a toolbox, a slender, delicate hand took the teddy bear.
Mist frowned. What a hassle...
The boy removed the ring from his left ring finger, carefully tucked it into his pocket, and patted it down.
[Ability: God's Gift]
He activated his ability in an instant.
To the two officers, it looked like he gave the bear a hard shake, then patted it, treating it as casually as his own television, as if a quick smack would fix it when it broke.
“Hey, kid! What are you doing?!”
Matsuda and Hagiwara's eyes went wide.
What is he doing? Does he want to die?
That was what they both thought.
Mist was startled by Matsuda Jinpei's sudden shout. His hand jerked, and the bomb nearly fell to the ground. Fortunately, Hagiwara Kenji caught it in time.
That scared the life out of me!
The boy said, confused, “Isn't this a bomb?”
Now Matsuda Jinpei and Hagiwara Kenji were the ones who were confused.
What does that have to do with him doing something suicidal?
Matsuda Jinpei was about to lose his temper. “Huh? Hey...”
Hagiwara Kenji hurriedly stepped in front of him, cutting him off. His expression was serious as he said, “It's a bomb. If it's controlled by mercury, you'll die.”
When the boy heard the answer, “It's a bomb,” his brows relaxed and he let out a small sigh of relief. If it was a bomb, then he hadn't done anything wrong.
He looked earnestly at the two officers and said with complete seriousness, “It'll be fine. That's how you deal with bombs.”
?
??
Hagiwara Kenji was briefly at a loss for words.
Matsuda Jinpei pushed past the person in front of him and strode angrily toward the white-haired boy, his voice rising. “Who told you that's how you deal with bombs? Don't you know the first thing you do when you find a bomb is call the police?”
Mist wasn't afraid of the fierce-looking man with curly hair. He simply gazed at him with clear, sky-blue eyes and said earnestly, “Xiao Er told me. He's really smart.”
Haha, he's smart, right? It's all Xiao Er's fault.
[Host, who is Xiao Er? Why are you blaming Xiao Er?]
Aw, at least I didn't say Xiao San.
“Huh?”
Matsuda Jinpei was practically laughing with anger.
What kind of ridiculous excuse was that?
Seeing the contempt on the other person's face, Mist suddenly felt a little hurt.
His head drooped, a film of tears clouding his beautiful eyes. His long fingers clutched at the hem of his shirt, crumpling the fabric.
He'd helped, and instead of praising him, the man was being mean to him.
Mist blinked, fighting back the tears that had gathered in his eyes.
He's beautiful, isn't he? Isn't he just a poor little thing? Doesn't he look terribly upset?
Comfort me. Come on, comfort me!
He kept muttering to himself.
The System was speechless.
“...Come on, Jinpei, don't be mad. It really has stopped...”
Even Hagiwara Kenji's voice sounded unsteady.
“What?!”
Matsuda Jinpei whipped around at his words. The bomb in his hands had indeed stopped counting down.
Hagiwara Kenji could hardly believe it, but the countdown on the bomb really had stopped.
Mist gave them a faint smile. The dimples at the corners of his mouth appeared and disappeared, making him look sweet and well-behaved.
“See? It's fixed.”
His voice rose at the end, like a little dog lifting its tail and asking for praise.
