[The female lead is a willow demon and the strongest character. The male lead is just decoration.]
Cheng Sangyu had been the Demon Lord for five hundred years.
She had been cautious and levelheaded in her role as leader, working diligently and never making a mistake. But one careless remark was deliberately twisted and spread by ill-wishers, ruining her reputation. In the end, the Heavenly Realm "upheld justice" by taking her down.
As it happened, Cheng Sangyu was tired of the position too. She might as well use this opportunity to fake her death and never deal with all these thankless responsibilities again.
She resolved one last crisis for her people, then deceived everyone with a spectacular death. Her true self quietly made her way to the retirement home she had prepared for herself.
Her death-faking plan went awry at the last minute. For no apparent reason, she slept for five hundred years, and when she woke, she discovered that the four realms were in chaos.
Cheng Sangyu thought her name had become nothing but a curse in the four realms. But she found that fewer people were speaking ill of her, and the stories told in the human realm recounted certain unknown events, mixing truth with fiction.
Most likely, they included praise along the lines of "the Demon Lord's great righteousness." Even she felt her scalp tingle when she read them. Who could possibly write something so shamelessly false?
Later, she met a mortal in the human realm and found on him a white jade token she had accidentally ruined all those years ago.
Only then did she learn that what she had thought was a joke had been the most precious treasure in his eyes.
Only then did she learn that after her death, someone had spent five hundred years clutching her one and only "keepsake" as he searched for her.
Only then did Cheng Sangyu turn to look at the person she had never taken to heart.
She had always been focused on the future of the demon race, and had never paid attention to the little one who followed behind her in the shadows.
But he should have been a pampered young prince in the Heavenly Realm's Golden Throne Hall. How had he fallen into the mire and become a mortal in the five hundred years they were apart?
He also clung to her like a ghost, never leaving her side no matter how hard she tried to get rid of him.
You should have lived a bright and noble life, not sunk into ruin while carrying a bad name.
[The setting is full of personal headcanons. Just have fun; don't take it too seriously.]
[This is my first novel as a newcomer. Please forgive any shortcomings.]

The first time Fan Zexiu saw Rong Jin, the girl was dressed in plain clothes, with a red cord around her neck and a pair of snow-carved pendants hanging from it.
The pendants had once been pure white and translucent, but they had long since been stained red with blood.
The flecks of red, together with the cord, stood out sharply against her pale neck, making the red seem even redder and the white nearly bloodless.
In front of the Wuyu Inn, by the Wuze River, stood two trees, a willow and a locust tree.
The girl stood on tiptoe, trying to break off a willow branch.
Fan Zexiu reached up and bent the branch down for her.
The girl smiled at him, gave a little bow, then walked away with a limp.
The second time, a solitary grave stood beside the girl. She wore a wedding dress and stood silently inside the Wuyu Inn, as though waiting for him to come.
Her last question was, "Could you take me with you?"
Fan Zexiu's heart softened, and he let her stay.
But who could have known that this would be the beginning of Rong Jin's revenge?
Many years later, she escaped by chance, and her lonely soul remained in the human world.
When they met again, Fan Zexiu had a cloth bag on his back. He smiled at her and spoke bluntly: "You're going to die."
After so many years, and the passage through the realms of the living and the dead, their appearances had changed beyond recognition.
Rong Jin simply smiled and said, "I've been dead for a long time."
Fan Zexiu seemed fascinated by her words. He nodded. "I hope we meet again."
Much later, Rong Jin encountered him once more. Fan Zexiu smiled and held out his hand. "Hello."
They met four times in their lives. Sometimes death stood between them, sometimes their worries were fleeting, sometimes they seemed to recognize each other, and sometimes they would never meet again.
