Also known as: After Leaving the Love Department of the Mission Management Bureau, I Decided to Break Up Every Couple I Saw
·
The first time Aiting saw Weiqing, she still believed in the legend of everlasting love. She was dreaming of being a princess in a one-sided romance, putting on a shoddy show of a toxic relationship, and acting like a handsome woman's dog.
That day, her crush's third girlfriend beat her until her nose bled. As she fled the house, she met a hooded woman with black hair and brown skin in a dim alley.
One green eye and one blue, like a cat's.
The woman handed her a tissue, wiped away her nosebleed, and told her, "You know, you could try living for yourself, too."
But what Aiting remembered even more vividly was the voice that came from the walkie-talkie on the hooded woman's chest: "Agent 303, what are you doing? You're not allowed to make private contact with the target!"
"Aren't you making it even more obvious by talking to me right now?!" While Weiqing argued with the walkie-talkie, Aiting had already vanished without a trace.
At the time, she thought she'd met a secret agent. It never occurred to her to wonder whether fate might be giving her a gift.
The second time Aiting saw Weiqing was during the onboarding process at the Transdimensional Mission Management Bureau. Someone handed Weiqing a disheveled, tear-streaked Aiting, while Weiqing did nothing but try to refuse.
But the director silenced her with a single sentence: "Agent 303, have you no shame? The mission failed and this girl fell out of her original world because of your contact with her."
Knowing she was at fault, Weiqing had no choice but to take Aiting in.
"Stop crying. From now on, call me your senior."
"Forget all that. Wipe your face clean."
"Stand tall. You can make a good life for yourself."
And so, that day, Aiting gained a senior.
"Senior, senior." She called Weiqing that everywhere she went.
In this unfamiliar world, in this high-tech universe, she followed her everywhere.
She never imagined that her first mission with her senior would be to bring together the person she'd spent her whole life pursuing, her unrequited love, and a new woman as their fated lovers...
The pain was like flesh being dug out and bone being carved apart.
They kept transmigrating between different worlds, bringing lovers together. That was the purpose of the Love Department, nestled in the cracks between time and space.
Toxic couples had to be matched. Abusive couples had to be matched. Unequal couples had to be matched. Even couples headed for a dramatic reconciliation had to be matched.
Gradually, she began to feel that something was wrong.
When Weiqing saw Aiting again years later, she didn't know whether she should raise her gun.
The determined, red-eyed, white-haired rebel before her was no longer the obedient little dog who'd been willing to stand in the rain. She had taken off her collar, left the organization, and traveled between worlds, breaking up every couple she came across and sabotaging their missions.
She was the leader of a pack of wolves, the wind that belonged to freedom.
She was the woman Weiqing could never forget.
Weiqing had so much she wanted to say to the junior she'd once cherished.
But the Bureau ordered her to raise her gun.
In the final moment as she took aim, standing in the rain, she could still hear the gentle voice that had crept into countless dreams:
"Have you really never felt sorry for our mission targets?"
"I just want them to love themselves."
"You were the one who taught me that in the first place."
"Weiqing."
"Senior."
But this was never the end.
