In a world where alphas and omegas are all the rage, Di Ning is the least noticeable beta at school.
Average grades, mild temperament, poor and pitiful, unpopular.
But no one knows that Di Ning's adoptive guardian is the top alpha boss Ying Chen, and that Di Ning once confessed to him.
-
The iron-fisted chairman Ying Chen looked at the pretty, mild-mannered omega who'd been sent over and sneered. “You've gone so far as to send people here?”
The young man, who only came up to his shoulder, jumped in fright. He pressed his lips into a pale little flower and said quietly, “Sir, I'm a beta.”
Out of pity, Ying Chen took him in.
Even later, when the mild-mannered boy woke him in the middle of the night to buy osmanthus cakes from a shop ten streets away, threw a tantrum and smashed his favorite watch, or dragged him out of a meeting with a tearful phone call,
Ying Chen still thought he was only taking pity on him.
Until Di Ning, eyes red and cheeks flushed, kissed the corner of his lips and stammered, “Big brother... I like you.”
Ying Chen's gaze turned grim, and his voice dropped. “Di Ning, don't be ridiculous.”
He stopped going into Di Ning's room altogether. To straighten out Di Ning's misguided feelings, he even let it be known that he was going to get married.
He'd raised Di Ning for five years, and now Di Ning said he liked him... It was utterly absurd.
Ying Chen rubbed his forehead, only to get a frantic call from the housekeeper. “Young Master Di has left! He hasn't been home for three days!”
Ying Chen's veins throbbed. “Why didn't you tell me sooner?”
The housekeeper was at a loss for words. After a long pause, he said, “...Sir, we thought you'd already given up on him.”
It took Ying Chen a week of searching to find Di Ning in a smoky, neon-lit bar.
The fair, adorable beta tilted his head, smiling at another alpha as he reached out to touch the man's lips.
Ying Chen grabbed the beta and pulled him into his arms, his gaze dark. “Di Ning, who said you could come to a place like this?”
The drunken Di Ning slowly raised his eyes. “Mr. Ying.”
All of Ying Chen's usual restraint and coolness vanished. His eyes reddened with anger. “What did you call me?”
The mild-mannered little beta clutched another alpha's sleeve in his arms and said softly, “Mr. Ying, we're not involved anymore.”
