At Snow Network Technology, everyone knew that Tao You in the art department had been having a run of bad luck lately. Somehow, she had offended the big boss, Ning Xuemian.
In the art team, Tao You's designs were always top-notch. Yet every time she submitted one, she was the only person whose work got picked apart again and again. Whenever she went into the boss's office, she wouldn't come out for at least an hour, and every time she emerged, she'd been lectured until her face was flushed and tears glimmered in her eyes.
After being taken away for another round of "reprimanding," Tao You had barely stepped out when she met her team leader's sympathetic gaze.
The team leader came over, handed her a cup of coffee, and patted her shoulder. "If you really can't take it, you should find another job. The pay and benefits are great here, but nobody can handle getting chewed out by the boss every day."
Tao You lowered her head, pressed her thumb against her crimson lips, and wiped away a suspicious trace of moisture. Then she smiled and said, "Actually, President Ning treats me very well. I learn a lot from every 'private meeting.'"
The team leader clearly didn't believe her. Shaking their head, they walked away, assuming she had been manipulated.
Tao You didn't explain. She returned to her desk, opened her computer, and sent a few messages to the person pinned at the top of her chat list, her tone coaxing.

Ning Xuemian suffered from severe psychological problems. What began as nothing more than a fear of germs had gradually developed into an aversion to any physical contact with other people.
After an attempt at intensive treatment failed, Ning's mother followed the doctor's advice and decided to put her through "desensitization therapy."
She chose a young employee at Ning Xuemian's company as the target: Tao You.
After signing a contract, Tao You moved into the Ning family home and became Ning Xuemian's secret wife in the eyes of the law.
Before they married, Ning Xuemian barely knew anything about Tao You. She only remembered that Tao You was diligent and responsible, and didn't seem to talk much.
After they married, three more words came to mind: highly sensitive, insecure, and prone to overthinking.
She was a little like the corn snake Ning Xuemian had kept as a child, dazed and blank-eyed, making her sigh and wish that Tao You would be a little braver.
After "keeping" Tao You for a while, Ning Xuemian found herself cornered in her office, her hair mussed by Tao You. She lowered her eyes and thought:
This little snake of hers seemed to have grown a little too bold.
Later, the desensitization therapy ended, and the contract was terminated.
When Ning Xuemian announced the news, Tao You said nothing. That night, she only held Ning Xuemian very tightly as they slept.
The next day, Tao You disappeared.
Ning Xuemian realized that life without her didn't seem quite so easy after all.
