Lin Qingsui accidentally transmigrated into a book and became the Fourth Prince, abandoned by the emperor in the Cold Palace. At the time, the five-year-old prince had wandered by accident near an abandoned palace and overheard Xie Wangshu, the powerful Eunuch of Nine Thousand Years, having a private conversation with someone.
Lin Qingsui was about to leave when the door opened. The Eunuch of Nine Thousand Years' handsome, sinister face appeared before him. Smiling, he asked, "Your Highness, the Fourth Prince, what are you doing here?"
Lin Qingsui fell silent for a second, then lifted his face and pretended to be innocent. "You're so pretty. Can you be my dad?"
Xie Wangshu was taken aback, then laughed as if he'd heard a joke. "Your Highness must be joking. Your father is His Majesty, the Son of Heaven."
Lin Qingsui pouted. "But he doesn't care about me. He's no good, and I don't want him as my dad anymore. You're so handsome. Can you be my dad?"
Xie Wangshu narrowed his eyes and studied him silently. After a long moment, he smiled. "All right."
Lin Qingsui immediately ingratiated himself with him. "Dad."
Xie Wangshu chuckled and escorted him back to the Cold Palace.

At first, Lin Qingsui only wanted to stay alive, while Xie Wangshu was merely amused. They each had their own schemes, but slowly, with time, a five-year-old child and a young man with a mutilated body began to develop genuine affection for each other. Xie Wangshu would toss Lin Qingsui whatever curious little trinkets he came across, and Lin Qingsui would miss him whenever he couldn't see him.
When the emperor went on an outing, Xie Wangshu and Lin Qingsui accompanied him. At night, Xie Wangshu slipped silently into Lin Qingsui's room, left him a candied hawthorn skewer that he'd coveted all day but the emperor hadn't let him eat, then left as if nothing had happened.
Later, when assassins attacked, Lin Qingsui was kidnapped, and Xie Wangshu was gravely wounded saving him.
When he ran out of strength, Xie Wangshu lured the assassins away, told Lin Qingsui to hide, and ran in the opposite direction.
He took shelter in a cave. Blood mixed with rainwater and kept flowing. Xie Wangshu thought of the day he'd been castrated. It had been raining that day, too. His lower body was covered in blood, and he'd thought he was going to die. But he had survived, becoming a eunuch, a man who'd been castrated. Now, though, he really was going to die.
He waited silently for death. But just as the rain was about to stop, he saw a small figure in the distance, picking her way toward him through the mud. It was Lin Qingsui.
She was filthy and covered in mud and water. Her hand was injured and bleeding, but when she saw him, she threw herself at him and clung to him. "I was so scared. I thought you were dead. Thank goodness you're alive."
After crying, she wiped away her tears and took out the medicine bottle she always carried. "Dad, don't be scared. I brought medicine. You'll be fine once you take it."

Later, when the emperor fell gravely ill, Xie Wangshu killed him at his bedside, altered the imperial edict, and put Lin Qingsui on the throne.
Lin Qingsui: !!!
Lin Qingsui waved her hands frantically. "I can't do it. I don't know how. I never wanted to be emperor."
Xie Wangshu calmly replied, "Why not? Don't worry. I'll help you."
In the first year of Lin Qingsui's reign, everyone thought the young emperor would be toppled by Xie Wangshu within three years, with a more obedient puppet put on the throne.
But three years passed, then another three, and another three. The young emperor remained firmly seated on the throne.
Everyone: Uh...
Meanwhile, in the Imperial Study, Lin Qingsui saw her adoptive father come in and hurriedly picked up a memorial. "Dad, Dad, help me figure out how I'm supposed to annotate this!"
Xie Wangshu: ...How many times have I taught her? Why still can't she get it?
