The Lead Singer and the Bassist

The first time Jiang Zhi asked Lian Yu what kind of music she liked, she slowly took out one earbud, carefully wiped it clean, and handed it to her male deskmate.

It was playing New Concept English.

But in the end, he still found out what songs Lian Yu liked: cheesy internet pop songs.

Later, Lian Yu became an unnoticed bassist in Jiang Zhi's band.

She stayed a bassist for ten years, long enough for Jiang Zhi, who claimed to be a confirmed bachelor, to get a girlfriend.

"Maybe I should try doing something else?" she said in the same unhurried tone as she said goodbye.

Jiang Zhi was annoyed. "Are you going to play pop music?"

Lian Yu shook her head. "I'm going abroad to get my PhD."

She left so casually and decisively that Jiang Zhi hadn't even processed it before she was gone.

She deactivated her phone number and deleted their mutual friends.

When Jiang Zhi found Lian Yu again, she was at a restaurant abroad with a tall man.

Jiang Zhi watched the man kiss Lian Yu goodbye beneath her apartment building.

His heart clenched, and the pain was just like the day he found out she'd deleted him.
