[Bratty, pampered troublemaker x cold, tough military officer | The husband chases his wife | Everyday life in a military compound]
Cheng Baozhu was stunningly beautiful, the famous "Miss Baozhu" of the tenement compound. Her temper, though, drew even more attention than her looks. She had an officer for a fiance whom everyone envied, Huo Xiangjun, yet she wanted nothing to do with him and was always making a fuss about breaking off their engagement.
After nearly drowning one day, she learned that she was nothing but a cannon-fodder character in a male-oriented novel, one who wouldn't survive past three chapters. She disliked how fierce the male lead was and insisted on breaking off their engagement. After making a scene and getting what she wanted, she was immediately killed off by the plot, becoming a mere speck of blood on the protagonist's road to success. The male lead not only rose to the top, but had beauties all over the place.
Cheng Baozhu sneered. "I have to break off this engagement! He's fierce, and on top of that, he's a womanizer. Whoever wants him can have him."
She grabbed the engagement token and headed straight for the Huo family, only to be blocked at the alley entrance by a tall figure.
Huo Xiangjun had a scar across his brow and wore a crisp military uniform. His eyes were shadowed as he asked, "Baozhu, what is it about me that you're unhappy with?"
Later, everyone in the compound waited for a good laugh.
"How many days can Huo Xiangjun put up with her? They'll split up sooner or later!"
"A spoiled brat with the living King of Hell? She'll be crying her way back to her parents before long!"
But Huo Xiangjun handed over his entire salary and crouched by the doorway to coax her before leaving. "Zhuzhu, what if I write you a promise? I'll only look at you for the rest of my life."
Cheng Baozhu kicked him. "Get lost!"
The man stepped forward and hugged her, murmuring, "Be good. I'll buy you candy when I get back."
Cheng Baozhu blushed and pushed him out the door. "Didn't you say you'd be late? Hurry up and go."
[Bonus scene]
One day, Huo Xiangjun found a yellowed sheet of paper at the bottom of an old trunk. On it, two little figures were drawn in crooked lines: a pretty, delicate girl with braids, and a boy beside her holding candy as he meekly took a scolding.
He suddenly remembered that evening ten years ago...
Little Cheng Baozhu had stuffed the last half of a peach pastry into his hand and snapped, "Hey! If someone steals your things, remember to fight back. Don't just stand there like a fool and let them bully you!"
1. The heroine is a genuinely pampered, bratty troublemaker; the hero seems cold and tough but is actually a devoted puppy.
2. Everyday life in a military compound in the 1970s, face-slapping and punishing scumbags, marriage first and love later. The hero is devoted in both body and heart. Happy ending.
"Cheng Baozhu, you made me fall for you. You're going to keep acting up for me for the rest of your life."
