Jiang Jun, the eldest son of the Jiang family, is a notorious rich playboy in City A. He's been a bully and a womanizer his whole life, and lately he's been relentlessly pursuing a poor top student from a neighboring department. Then he suddenly awakens to the fact that he's a universally hated cannon-fodder character in a novel, a stumbling block in the lives of the main couple and a catalyst for their romance. His ending is tragic, too.
The book says of him: "A life of misery, never finding love, and dying alone. This is punishment for a life of excess and evil."
A cannon-fodder character suddenly coming to his senses should be a good thing, since he can avoid some of the risks. But right after he awakens, he gets the news that his family has gone bankrupt.
A disaster from the start.
The young master of the Jiang family plummets from wealth to poverty. With no home and no money for food, he is on the verge of becoming homeless when the poor top student he used to bully takes him in.
Jiang Jun spits at him. "Ptooey. Get lost. Go find your main-character bottom."
The main-character top, Liang Simu, gives him a cold look and forcibly drags him back to his shabby little apartment.
After his bath, Jiang Jun sits on the bed while Liang Simu dries his hair with a cold expression. Jiang Jun feels aggrieved and frustrated. Why? Sure, he'd bullied him before, but eventually the two of them had started to get a little flirty.
And now you're the destined partner of someone else.
So why are you acting so nice to me now? What, you trying to get revenge on me?
Jiang Jun keeps waiting for Liang Simu to take revenge. Instead, Liang Simu goes to school while working eight jobs to support him. He runs over ten kilometers to buy the abalone and lobster congee Jiang Jun casually mentioned wanting, while eating plain noodles himself. He takes Jiang Jun to the market to teach him basic life skills, and to the wholesale market to teach him how to haggle. The pampered young master, who can't tell cooking oil from rice, gradually develops a taste for everyday life.
Jiang Jun keeps his head down and bides his time, dodging malicious people and situations and avoiding countless plot points laid out in the original novel. In the end, he is the one who gets revenge and takes down the villains.
In their days of poverty, the two rely on each other. The fallen young master doesn't have to suffer even a little. Liang Simu takes all the hardship upon himself.
Jiang Jun can't understand it. "How are you so good at putting up with hardship?"
Liang Simu glares at him without a word.
Jiang Jun grins roguishly, walks over, and puts an arm around his neck, pressing their foreheads together. "I know. You're fucking in love with me."
Great. Let's keep going like this.
