Two months after they met, Hua Wu called Wen Chuman into her office.

Her usually poised, gentle, considerate, easygoing superior was blushing deeply now. The shame and longing in her bright, limpid eyes seemed ready to set her ablaze.

She was torn in every possible way, but in the end, she still said the words she herself despised:

“Chuman, everyone can see how well you’ve been doing.”

“But...”

“You understand, don’t you? The kind of filthy thing I mean. So, what do you think? If you say no, I’ll have to reconsider your spot in the debut lineup...”

Wen Chuman looked surprised and innocent, which only made Hua Wu feel more ashamed.

She lowered her head and murmured in her own defense, “You did... tease me before, anyway. I had no choice but to...”

Before Hua Wu could continue, Wen Chuman happily agreed at once:

“Then I guess I have no choice but to give in to you.”

Wonderful.

Thinking of that so-called “teasing” that night: the blushes blooming across trembling skin, her tightly clenched legs and fidgeting hands...

And most moving of all, Hua Wu’s face as she struggled and gave in.

The way she broke through her usual calm exterior, slowly blossoming in Hua Wu’s eyes like a fire.

Hua Wu’s eyes held only her, pleading with no one but her.

That was exactly what Wen Chuman had dreamed of.

Wen Chuman was probably one of those rich kids who simply had to prove they were capable.

Since joining the idol competition show, she hadn’t taken a single bit of money or support from her family. She barely even answered calls from her parents, afraid they’d tell her to come home and inherit the family business, or send her money.

Apart from accidentally ending up in bed with her company executive, Ms. Hua, she was a perfect trainee in every way: skilled, hugely popular, and always engaging with her fans.

But after leaving Hua Wu’s office that day,

she took the unprecedented step of calling her mother, and even asked for the family’s resources:

“Mom, can you give me the company I work for?”

Wen’s mother was so moved that she burst into tears, thinking her daughter had finally come to her senses and wanted to go into business. But Wen Chuman said:

“Why? Because I want to play.”

Because she wanted to play.

A role-reversal game where she and her superior swapped places.

“You actually turned me down? Do you know who I am?”

“I do.” Du You smiled warmly, yet remained perfectly composed. “You’re my direct supervisor in the cat food sales department.”

“The person even the boss has to kowtow to.”

“The prettiest woman in the entire company.”

Du Ruan looked smug. “Then why would you still...”

“The little cat I brought home when I was fourteen.”

Du Ruan drooped her little cat head, her round cat eyes brimming with injured tears.

“So you knew all along. Why did you still reject me?”

Ten years ago, Du You found a frail little cat.

The kitten was beautiful and on the verge of death, its patterned fur soaked and disheveled in the rain. It looked as if it might not survive much longer.

Du You didn’t have time to think about what her mother might say. She took the kitten home at once and named her Ruanruan.

Ruanruan was adorable, quick-witted, and docile. She was Du You’s perfect cat, keeping her company through the summer and autumn of her fourteenth year.

Just as Du You was imagining taking Ruanruan to be spayed and heading toward a longer life together...

Ruanruan went missing.

Even though Du You had secured the windows, and was always careful to close the front door.

Though the loss still haunted her, the heartbroken Du You could only carry her memories of Ruanruan and grow up alone.

Until ten years later.

Du You had grown from a student into a wage slave, stuck in the same monotonous job, when one day a newly appointed supervisor suddenly breathed new life into the place.

Du You wasn’t the sort to read too much into things.

But the first time she saw her new boss, Du Ruan, with those round, upturned cat eyes, that proud expression, and the blown kiss she sent her from across the room...

She actually saw a glimpse of that cat in her young new superior.
