Qin Zhen passes the civil service exam in H City and is assigned to Team 1 of the Mobile Unit at the Bureau for Handling Abnormal Events, becoming a salaried D-rank agency investigator.
On his first day at work, an emergency forces the team to hold his new-hire orientation in their fieldwork vehicle.
The captain says, "Now I'll tell you the truth hidden beneath this peaceful everyday life."
Qin Zhen replies solemnly, "Captain, are you testing me? I received a good political education and am a steadfast materialist. I absolutely don't believe in supernatural nonsense!"
A forty-story-tall octopus monster can drain an armed esper dry with a single swing of its tentacle. Mobile Team 1 is on the verge of being wiped out.
Qin Zhen takes a distant look. "Modern farms over-fatten their livestock way too much. An octopus this big has nothing going for it except a lot of meat. It probably doesn't taste good."
Qin Zhen swallows. The battle suddenly turns around. The octopus monster loses all its abilities, has part of a tentacle cut off, and flees the eerie domain.
That night, the severed tentacle shows up at a night-market barbecue stall as one of the dishes at Qin Zhen and his colleagues' victory celebration.
Later, a major urban legend spreads among the espers of H City and throughout the eerie world: a Class 3S Annihilator has appeared, capable of absorbing the supernatural abilities of every eerie entity.
The director of H City's Bureau for Handling Abnormal Events issues an order in the middle of the night: "The Annihilator is in our bureau. We can't let anyone or any monster know that we don't have any information about the Annihilator!"
The director sighs. "I hope he doesn't become the next Yu Xingming, lost in the mist."
