On a blazing summer day when he was six, little tyrant Yan Zhao moved into Wuhai Alley with his parents and saw Heng Liang for the first time, standing outside as punishment for doing something wrong.
What a sour face, Yan Zhao thought.
What a spoiled brat, Heng Liang thought, staring at the boy beneath the lace parasol.
One lived at one end of the alley, the other at the other.
Yan Zhao was willful and hot-tempered; Heng Liang was a scowling wolf cub. Neither could stand the sight of the other.
Yan Zhao was in poor health and had to drink Chinese medicine every day. He hated the bitter taste, so he secretly poured it at the roots of an old tree in the alley.
The tree survived, but Yan Zhao nearly got beaten to death by his own father. "If Heng Liang hadn't told me, I never would have found out!"
Yan Zhao blew up and stormed down to the end of the alley, yelling, "Heng Liang, you dog! Get out here!"
Heng Liang blew up, too. "You spoiled brat! That'll teach you to tattle to my mom!"
They fought from age six to sixteen, each leaving the other worse for wear.
Yan Zhao swore there was no one in the world he hated more than Heng Liang.
But why had Heng Liang started letting him hit him?
And not only that, how had he started looking... kind of like a person?
Stressed out by the college entrance exams and unable to sleep in the middle of the night, Yan Zhao pulled out his phone and called "Heng Liang the Dog."
After two rings, the call was picked up. Heng Liang's voice was thick with sleep. "You calling me at two in the morning, or are you sick in the head?"
Yan Zhao: "Come outside."
Heng Liang: "Whoever goes is the other's grandson."
Yan Zhao hung up without hesitation. Five minutes later, he saw Heng Liang standing under the tree, bundled up in his clothes. Raising an eyebrow, he called, "Grandson."
Grandson Heng Liang scowled and yawned impatiently. "Hurry up."
Yan Zhao reached out and rubbed Heng Liang's earlobe between his fingertips, soon growing sleepy.
When he was done, he turned his back on him. "Get lost, grandson."
Heng Liang's earlobe was rubbed hot, and the more he thought about it, the more he felt he'd been taken advantage of.
So he figured, in for a penny, in for a pound, shoved Yan Zhao against the tree, and kissed him hard.
1. Yan Zhao had a habit from childhood: rubbing Heng Liang's earlobe made him sleepy. When he grew up, he started using it as a sleeping pill.
2. They went from trading insults to kissing, and from fighting to ending up in bed.
3. Happy ending. Both families are happy, and this is a little sweet story.
