A distant branch of the Su family fell on hard times. Only a seventeen-year-old boy was left in the family, and with nowhere else to turn, he sought refuge with the Sus.
Though he wore shabby clothes and looked utterly wretched, the boy had strikingly delicate features: a high nose and red lips, and a face of breathtaking beauty. The moment he appeared before the Su family, everyone was captivated.
Su Qing thought there was no harm in helping out a distant relative. She never expected the family matriarch to tell her that she and the boy had been betrothed as children, and that he had once saved her life. Now that his family had fallen on hard times and he was all alone, she couldn't break off the engagement and invite other people to condemn her.
Su Qing couldn't remember anything from when she was little. She found the idea of marrying a stranger difficult, but she wasn't heartless or faithless. He was, after all, her betrothed, so she married him.
After the wedding, Su Qing continued to run the family's herbal medicine shop. For the most part, she and her husband got along well. The only trouble was that her handsome husband was aloof and proud, and flew into a sulk at the slightest thing. Having to coax him all the time wore Su Qing out.
As it happened, her cousin returned from doing business abroad. When he discovered that she had married so soon, his expression turned strangely sour.
Only later did Su Qing learn that it wasn't her handsome husband who had saved her as a child, but her cousin. That was also how her cousin had earned the engagement to her.
Though Su Qing was a woman, she had always been upright and despised scheming, deceit, and lies. She immediately wrote a divorce letter and told him she wanted a divorce.
For the first time, her usually proud and handsome husband’s eyes reddened. Gritting his teeth, he said, "You don't believe me, and you're divorcing me because of him? If we divorce, I will never come back!"
Su Qing closed her eyes, her mind made up. "You and I will never see each other again!"
That night, he left the Su home without looking back, and didn't even take the money Su Qing gave him.
Su Qing worried about how he would get by, but her anger at being deceived hadn't faded. She didn't send anyone to look for him, though she watched herself grow thinner.
Later, the family matriarch returned and told her the truth.
It turned out her cousin had been lying to her all along. He had loved Su Qing since childhood, and jealousy had driven him to make up the whole story.
When Su Qing learned the truth, she vomited blood.
Realizing she had misunderstood him, Su Qing decided to bring him back. She heard he had gone to the capital, so she packed her things and set out alone to find her husband.
After finally reaching the capital and asking around for his whereabouts, she discovered he was at the Duke of Jin's residence.
Now the young heir of the duke's household, he stood before the grand gates of the estate and looked down at her. "Who are you?"
Su Qing: "I'm your wife. I've come to take you home."
To her surprise, he gave a cold laugh. "Su Qing, we've been divorced for three years: one thousand and ninety-five days, thirteen thousand one hundred and forty hours! And only now you've come to take me home? Too late!"
