The Widow and the White Snake

The newlywed bride of the Ji family has become a widow. With all manner of relatives eyeing the old couple's property, they come up with a terrible plan: summon their younger daughter, who was sent to the mountains as a child to practice Taoism, and have her pretend to be a man and consummate the marriage with the new bride. That way, they can protect their property and keep the bride and her dowry in the family. Besides, their younger daughter is an unconventional person who will spend her whole life practicing the Way.

Yun Hua is a respectable young lady from a distinguished family. When she first hears her parents-in-law's outrageous proposal, she nearly takes her own life to prove her resolve. But they weep and beg her, saying that both the Ji family and she herself are at the end of their rope, with no choice but this desperate measure. Softhearted, Yun Hua agrees, especially since she truly has no way out.

But she never expected her younger brother-in-law to be such a beautiful man, as lovely as jade. Yun Hua doesn't even dare look him in the eye. She avoids him for a full thirty days, until one night, a pair of handsome hands stops her from closing the door. "Sister-in-law, why are you so afraid of me? If I were a woman, would you still avoid me?"

At his words, Yun Hua feels as if a great burden has been lifted and happily accepts living with him. But at night, she keeps having strange, unspeakable dreams, in which she's entwined by an untiring white snake. Its silvery scales glisten with moisture, and she can't help but let out soft, lingering sounds, her cheeks flushed...

The next day, she takes Rong Qing's hand and says, "Ah Qing, will you come with me to a Taoist temple?"

Rong Qing calmly asks, "Sister-in-law, are you feeling unwell?"

Yun Hua: "I think I've caught something filthy!"

Rong Qing: "...It's nothing. Spring has simply arrived."
