[Update: I’m revising the story! Stay tuned!]
Yu Zhouheng became the head of Tianyu Mountain at a young age. She was graceful and otherworldly, exceptionally talented, and her mastery of water magic was unmatched among the immortal sects. The weather at Tianyu depended entirely on the workings of her heart. When she was happy, the sun shone brightly; when she was unhappy, thunder rolled across the sky.
On a day in the sixteenth year of Tianyou, the weather at Tianyu swung wildly between overcast and clear. A fierce wind blew for a while, and Yu Zhouheng came back from the mountain carrying a little kitten.
For all her extraordinary talent, the elder had one fatal weakness: a soft heart.
On Qi Yan’s first night at Tianyu Mountain, she set fire to the sleeping quarters. Yu Zhouheng’s heart softened, and she let her stay, moving her into her own quarters. On the second day, Qi Yan beat up three male disciples. Yu Zhouheng’s heart softened again, and with a wave of her hand, she struck all three from the register of immortals. On the third day, Qi Yan split a thousand-year-old tree with her bare hands. Yu Zhouheng gritted her teeth and took her in as a disciple.
After consulting ancient texts, she learned that the young girl possessed the heart-soul of Mingyuan, a Demon Venerable from a past life.
From then on, a little troublemaker lived in Yunshou Hall. She said she couldn’t read, so Yu Zhouheng tossed her three books. The next day, she could recite them backward. When a very old disciple from the neighboring Guxi Hall came looking for trouble with her young apprentice, Qi Yan hid her smile and claimed responsibility as she looked at the hulking, bruised figure opposite her.
This fearless and unruly young disciple listened only to Yu Zhouheng. She rose at the hour of the Tiger to wash her master’s face, cooked at the hour of the Snake and watched to make sure her master ate everything, dragged her out of the council hall at the hour of the Monkey to drink tea, and stayed by her side at the hour of the Dog until she fell asleep.
Yu Zhouheng didn’t think she was unruly or arrogant. She thought her little disciple was like an hourglass, always right on time.
In the twenty-sixth year of Tianyou, Qi Yan was nineteen. Under Yu Zhouheng’s devoted guidance, she grew into a lovely young woman, with immortal arts and sword techniques at her fingertips and a graceful bearing that made others envious. None of the immortal sects could tell she possessed the heart-soul of Mingyuan. They praised the master and disciple, who roamed the world together, saying the immortal sects had a bright future.
But she had been taught to be so well-behaved that she even quietly kept her love for Yu Zhouheng to herself. That was when Yu Zhouheng started to panic.
Until one day, Yu Zhouheng finally broke the silence.
Aren’t you supposed to be the Demon Venerable who throws the world into chaos?
