Synopsis:
On the third day of the third lunar month, the notorious male consort in the rear courtyard of Prince Su's manor woke up and suddenly lost his memory.
The servants discovered that the consort seemed to have become a different person...
He used to act timidly around everyone, but now he was neither servile nor arrogant.
He used to be ignorant and unlearned, but now he could speak with eloquence.
Most importantly, his smile now seemed to have a bewitching quality. He left the maids utterly enchanted, and even the prince, who had always despised him, fell for him.
And so, from that day on, the servants of the manor began to whisper: The consort was possessed by a ghost.
“I heard from the woman who brings him his meals that he’s been like a different person ever since the Shangsi Festival.”
“Wasn’t that woman bullying him before? He nearly worked her to death that day.”
“He makes no sound when he walks, and his heels never touch the ground. People say that’s what happens when someone’s possessed by a ghost.”
What finally made the rumors seem true was the consort’s sudden disappearance after the Mid-Autumn banquet.
“Wen Jin” had lost his memory. Everyone said he was the first male consort in history, a famous laughingstock in the capital, but none of it felt real to him.
Sure enough, after experiencing all kinds of strange events, he arrived at an absurd truth: he might really be a ghost who had taken over a corpse.
Rubbing his fingertips, still unaccustomed to them, “Wen Jin” felt that something very important was missing from his hands. He had to find it.
Looking out over the dilapidated courtyard, he thought, I absolutely must not be trapped here.
Years later, the “Young Master Liufeng,” famed throughout the martial world for his painting and martial arts, joined the Court of Judicial Review after saving the emperor.
On the day he took office, at the palace gates...
Prince Su stared at the newcomer in shock. “Wen Jin, I finally found you! What are you doing here?!”
The top scholar beamed at him. “Huaiyu, so you’re the Young Master Liufeng!”
With a folding fan in hand, Wen Jin smiled and bowed. “I am Wen Jin, courtesy name Huaiyu, and I currently serve as the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review.”
Notes:
1. No romantic pairings, but everyone is drawn to the protagonist. Men and women alike develop unrequited feelings for him, but he never falls for anyone. This is important!
2. The story is set in a fictional world of melodramatic tropes. The martial world and the imperial court are deeply intertwined. Both men and women may serve as officials, but consorts and royal sons-in-law cannot hold important positions.
3. Includes a substitute marriage. Wen Jin, the original owner of the body, took his younger sister’s place as the prince’s consort. There is more to this than meets the eye, and it forms an important part of the plot.
4. The protagonist is cheerful, but he sometimes instinctively does things that are literally suicidal. The reason will be explained later.
