At twenty, after graduating from Glasgow Technical College, Lester Lyle used all the money he'd saved to buy a bankrupt auto repair shop. Its abandoned office, dusty repair bays, and empty yard were the starting point of his bright future, the dream he'd held onto ever since first meeting his father at twelve.
He would build a racing team of his own. He would create the fastest race car. He would find the finest drivers. At speeds that rivaled the wind, they would stand at the center of the world!
At twenty, Lester Lyle was full of ambition and desperate to be recognized, approved of, and closely watched by the people he cared about.
He didn't know that one day, Lester Lyle, the boy from the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland, guardian of a lonely island, would become the center of a world.
One hundred and fifty miles north of Scotland's northern coast lies the Shetland Islands, the last stretch of land between Britain and the Arctic, known as the edge of the world. There, remnants of Viking culture and even Old Norse still permeate local life, setting it apart from distant Britain. It has a fascinating, austere beauty.
Are they Scottish? They are the dowry the Danish royal family was forced to leave behind. To this day, at least, the islands still preserve the tradition of the Viking fire festival.
Lester Lyle lived on the islands for twelve years. When it was time to leave home and go to the capital, Lerwick, for secondary school, he didn't want to go. He loved it there. If he walked north from home all the way to the coast, he could get closer to the Arctic. He couldn't see it, but he felt he would someday.
He imagined himself bobbing on the North Sea's towering waves, pushing forward through storms in the dark. Back then, he thought he would become a great sea hunter.
In the end, he never made it to Lerwick. He went to Scotland and received the most "advanced" education in Glasgow, because that year the father he'd met for the first time gave them a large sum of money. He didn't know how his mother had managed it, but it proved that a Viking girl could do anything she set her mind to.
The aspiring hunter left the sea, but storms and towering waves pushed him toward a new battlefield.
He no longer wanted to be a hunter. He wanted to be a captain!
