Late one night, after returning from a promotional gig, Rong Pian found a man and a dog crouching outside her door.
The tall, handsome man was huddled on the ground beside the big dog, looking utterly aggrieved.
He was her ex-husband, from whom she'd divorced a year and a half ago.
“What are you doing here?” she asked after a long, stunned silence.
The man raised his head. His eyes trembled behind his glasses as he murmured, “Maybach misses you.”
Maybach was the Alaskan Malamute.
Rong Pian raised an eyebrow. “Maybach misses me?”
He nodded. “Mm.”
Rong Pian said, “Then let Maybach in. You can go home.”
The man immediately stood up. He stared at her for a long while, looking as if he wanted to say something but couldn't. At last, in an even quieter voice, he said, “I miss you too.”
