Zhou Qi rarely comes back to her hometown, and this time it's only to attend the banquet of a cousin she barely knows.
Some relatives she hasn't seen in years know little about her. When they see Zhou Qi, they ask, "Hey, are you the older sister or the younger one? Why are you here alone? I remember your mom had two girls, didn't she?"
Zhou Yue smiles. "I'm the younger sister. My older sister is gone."
"Gone?" The other person is naturally surprised, showing the curious sympathy people have when they hear bad news. "Oh dear, what happened? Was she sick?"
"It wasn't an illness or an accident."
Anyone with a little tact knows not to ask after that. The brief awkwardness and morbid curiosity pass, and the conversation moves gently on.
Zhou Qi's twin sister, Zhou Yue, died in her final year of high school. It would have been one thing if she'd died of an illness or in an accident, but she was murdered and her body desecrated, shocking the small town.
After her death, the story goes that Zhou Yue was a rebellious student who started dating too young, a delinquent who cheated on her boyfriend and deserved what she got, and the wronged female ghost haunting the bridge alcove where she died.
Of course, when people bring it up, they only say that a high school girl died horribly, how pitiful she was, and how much her family must miss her. They remember her as if everyone in the world were kind and sincere. But the truth is a complete mess. Even someone who wants to report her story can't just use a standard template.
There was no cold, weak mother, no father who cheated, gambled, and beat his family, no thrilling murder investigation. And there was no story of her parents taking the law into their own hands to torture and kill the criminal, either. Zhou Yue was an ordinary person, and so was Zhou Qi. Her sister died on an utterly ordinary day. Some people loved her, and some people still remember her.
"My sister died on a day when tomorrow was just about to arrive in her life."

Note:
This book uses an unconventional narrative style. It's a tragic ending, though in a sense, it's also a happy ending.
Personally, I think it could be considered a variation on the documentary novel. If you find it difficult to read in chapter order, try following the titles instead.
If you want to know what the whole story is about first, go straight to the investigation reports in the last three, four, and five chapters, then read from the beginning. It may be easier to understand that way.
Theme: All evil will eventually be destroyed.
It's so well written. I really like such delicate humanistic care. I cried all the way to the end. Although the entry point is completely different from the story, it reminded me a bit of "Master of the World", the gentle and tolerant perspective of a female creator.
Does the picture mean that all members are bitter gourds?
Thank you so much to the author. I cried while reading it. It was so well written.
