The first time Chen Fei saw Ling Mocheng was onstage at Minghui High School, giving a speech as the student representative.
The sun was blazing that day. He was like cherry-flavored soda bubbling away in midsummer, the kind of thing that looked so refreshing.
But he also had the lofty, well-behaved-student air that Chen Fei found most tiresome.
She yawned, bored.
But the next day, this model student caught her interest.
It started on an afternoon when she skipped class and spotted Ling Mocheng.
His tousled black hair partly obscured his handsome, gentle features, but the corners of his mouth curved in excitement.
Chen Fei still remembered that afternoon: the sunlight made the blood on the scalpel in his hand, and the crimson covering his slender fingers, look indescribably dazzling.
He was dissecting a sparrow, and he was thoroughly enjoying himself.
Ah.
She wanted to kiss him right then and there.
That was what Chen Fei thought.

The next time they met was on the Penn campus, in a quiet bar on Walnut St, where wooden wind chimes hung everywhere.
Loud music blared through the punk headphones, bigger than her face. Chen Fei adjusted the camera her underling had set up, ready to film her final project for the semester.
A tall, fiery-red figure stepped into her shot, becoming the brightest unexpected presence in the frame.
"Doesn't that look like Ling Mocheng?" her underling said.
"No way, Charles never goes to the bar." Someone disagreed.
Chen Fei turned the electronic music in her headphones up to full volume and winked at the busty American girl beside her.
"Make a bet. The winner gets to kiss him."

Someone ranked the handsome Asian guys at Ivy League schools in the eastern United States, calling the list "Ivy League Must-Eats." Ling Mocheng was number one.
But plenty of people questioned the ranking. Ling Mocheng was warm and polite to everyone, yet there was always an unbridgeable distance between him and other people. Even the fiery advances of American bombshells seemed to bounce right off him.
How could he be a "must-eat" if no one had ever had a taste?
At a standalone house on 116 Market St, Chen Fei looked down at the man who had shown no restraint last night and was now resting his chin on her thigh, cautiously begging her to forgive him. She had her doubts.
A must-eat, huh? Maybe he was the one who'd eat you alive and leave nothing but bones.
"You're so awful," she accused him.
"You taught me," he shot back.
"Oh, really?" Chen Fei laughed in exasperation, pulling her pale, slender thigh away as Ling Mocheng hooked his little finger around hers and rubbed his face against it, looking pitiful. "If I come back to see you next summer, I'll be a dog!"
He pinched her earlobe again. A tingling ache spread through her limbs, following her nerves, but his smiling eyes made it impossible to stay angry.
"Then I'll tie you up and keep you here."
Only later did Chen Fei realize:
Ling Mocheng hadn't been joking.
The Fei in "crimson down the throat" wasn't Chen Fei's Fei. It was... Ling Mocheng's Fei.
