Dump the scum, switch love interests
Have you ever seen an ancient Greek god in charge of the crematorium?
The Primordial God himself was enjoying a leisurely vacation when his mobile device started buzzing nonstop. The data for the novels under his care had crashed, and the main characters were killing themselves en masse. The crematorium had really become a crematorium this time.
At this rate of death, the Primordial God hadn't even caught his breath before his superiors nearly sent him to the underworld.
Forced to work overtime, the Primordial God stared at the data fragments of these crematorium-novel protagonists and fell into deep thought.
How had these handsome, stylish, talented male leads, who could even rake in money, managed to fail so spectacularly at the crematorium?
The Primordial God transmigrated into the novels to painfully repair the data. He dragged his feet day after day, and somehow became everyone's former beloved in every story.
It turned out that working diligently was no match for slacking off.
Rather than take the initiative, it was better to lie flat and enjoy life.
A melodious piano tune drifted closer from afar. A man dressed in black, looking utterly disheveled, sat in a room that was white on all sides. Across from him sat another young man.
The young man couldn't quite make out the man's face or features. The man was hidden behind a layer of translucent mist, leaving only the blurred outline of his nose and his slightly parted lips visible.
"Who are you?"
"I'm a programmer in the upper realm, in charge of crematorium data. Oh... To you humans, I suppose that makes me a god." The man's lips parted slightly. His voice was ethereal, its low, delicate undertones as refined as a violin.
"The higher-ups noticed that something seems to be wrong with the data in your world, which led to you... Let me see, Chu Ci, right?" He paused, lowered his head, and opened the notebook in his hand. His long fingers slid over the paper, their sound especially clear in the spacious room.
"Which led to you killing yourself, is that right?"
His voice was cool and detached, without a trace of emotion or inflection.
He sat above, looking down at the man below, who was called Chu Ci. One of his legs was crossed, and the toe of his leather shoe tilted Chu Ci's face upward. He saw that Chu Ci's face was now streaked with panicked tears.
"All right, don't cry." The man seemed to have little patience. He had no idea how to comfort people, either. He was a god, not a babysitter at some daycare.
"I'll take over your body for a while to inspect and repair it, then return it to you. It'll take... five to ten years, probably. Can you accept that?" As he spoke, he took a contract out of his briefcase.
"Oh, right. You don't have the right to refuse." The man lightly tapped Chu Ci's back with the toe of his shoe. It wasn't forceful, but the impatience in the gesture was clear. "Before you sign, I have two questions for you."
"First question: do you regret it?"
"I regret it! I regret it so much. I should have known from the start that he didn't love me. He only wanted to use me to get famous and have me write songs for him... I..."
Chu Ci's frantic torrent of words irritated the man. He waved his hand, and somehow Chu Ci found himself unable to speak.
The man released his hold over Chu Ci's mouth.
"All right, one last question. Do you still love him?"
Chu Ci seemed to be lost in some memory. He lowered his head in silence. After a long while, he finally seemed to summon the courage. His lips moved, his throat worked, but not a word came out. The answer he wanted to give was completely different from what he truly felt, but mortals couldn't lie to gods.
Understanding Chu Ci's answer, the man chuckled. His lips curved into a clear smile.
"As expected of a lovesick male lead who can't have the one he loves. Looks like this data was created perfectly."
"Fide, show him out." He stood up from his chair. His leather shoes made a dull scraping sound against the floor as he picked up his briefcase and brought up a data display.
"Let's go. Time to work."
